Reconstruction work on Kaohsiung canal bridges completed
Wednesday, November 3, 2010
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu and Kaohsiung City Council members took a cruise of the No. 2 canal in the southern city yesterday following the completion of the reconstruction work for six bridges spanning over the waterway. Chen said the renovation project enables residents in Kaohsiung to have an additional place for recreation activities.
She said the canal will have a new name of “Happy River” which was selected among several suggestions.
There are walkway and bikeway added on both banks of the 5.3-kilometer river.
City government officials said they will consider a proposal to allow more water activities in view of the beautiful sceneries on two sides of the river.
But only small boats rowing with oars will be allowed for the river mainly because there is a height limit of two meters at the six bridges, they said.
It is impossible for large motor boats to pass through the bridges, they explained.
