Trail builders gearing up for work on second phase of Violet Crown Trail

We had a thread on this, but I can't find it now. This is one of the coolest projects around Austin right now. This is the type of project that many generations in the future will enjoy and benefit from. The link includes a map.

Climb into a car and drive someplace to go for a hike, a bike ride or a swim?

We'd rather walk or pedal right from the front door, thank you very much.

A lot of folks will be able to do just that when the Violet Crown Trail, a 30-mile pathway that ultimately will stretch from Zilker Park to Hays County, opens. The long, seamless expanse of trail will connect neighborhoods with parks, pools, libraries, schools and shopping centers and create lots of new terrain for hiking, running and pedaling.

Completion of the entire route is probably at least five years away, depending on funding, but work is gearing up on the crucial middle portion now.

Violet Crown Trail - South Austin

Has anyone seen this? Pretty cool. A trail from Zilker down to the Lady Bird Wildflower Center, and then down to Onion Creek in Hays County. 30 miles one way.

So lets see... Spring of 2014 will be reserved for hiking along the new boardwalk and spring of 2015 will be biking all the way to the wildflower center. I believe Waller Creek should be open by then as well. So many new amazing trails becoming available downtown. Load the bikes on the metro rail and make a day of it!

Shoal Creek, too. We're going to have a very impressive collection of trail.

I merged these two.

We used to ride at the Veloway when we were kids. There are a lot of trails around it also if you look on Google Earth.

I rode the trails in Sunset Valley last year which were pretty neat. It was kind of not wild enough, though, since it backed up to the retail at Sunset Valley and some of the homes near Brodie.

I also ride on the greenbelt near Zilker in the spring after my bike rides around downtown. I go down past Campbell's Hole and go for a swim to cool off after my rides. I almost got lost down there at like 10 pm a few months back. If I hadn't had my bike light, I wouldn't have been able to see my hand in front of my face. lol

This is going to use some of the undeveloped greenbelt right below my house near Convict Hill and MOPAC. I have enjoyed running my dogs down there unmolested by too many other folks, but I guess I am going to have to share this "secret" area with the masses. Oh, well, can't stand in the way of progress.

There's an open house on it at Hampton Library July 30, 5:30-8:30:

I plan to attend - worried NIMBY neighbors will derail this project.
