Projects & Construction:
Kimpton's Cardinal Hotel & Residences: Built!
I will miss not posting on this project. It was likely my favorite. But, we will soon have another boutique hotel adaptive reuse project, in an Art Deco building, to follow! I am excited about that! We can also spend the night in this completed building or visit the restaurant; which is the great news this thread brings to you this week! According to Kimpton, this is the first hotel in the world with a recreation room. It includes a slide, bowling, basketball, and much more. There seems to be a large amount of excitement, statewide, for this hotel. Including state tourism officials traveling to Winston-Salem to help open the hotel. As usual, when a construction project in this thread is completed... a huge photography post is made to celebrate completion! Lets celebrate completion SSP style!

The missing smoke rings I spoke of, as they appeared in 1929:

I'm not sure when or why the silver smoke rings were removed from the lobby ceiling? I was hoping Kimpton would restore them. Years ago, it was a feature many visitors to the building loved. The Empire State Building also has details like this on their ceiling. I'm guessing the smoke rings were removed in the 1982-1984 renovation?

I think workers still haven't installed the glass in the front awning and I think they have more signage to install, so maybe I can post another update on this project? Maybe.

Forsyth County Courthouse:
On May 9, Forsyth County will vote to seek an option to purchase a site at Third and Liberty streets for a new courthouse. The option will expire December 31. This is Piedmont Federal Bank's building in downtown Winston-Salem. The bank is considering constructing a new mixed-use building beside the Pepper Building (Future Hotel Indigo).

Undergraduate Science & Engineering Center:
I would like to see the spandrels rebuilt and the last windows installed before USA Cycling's national championship events take place, later this month. A spot on the United States Olympic Cycling Team will be awarded at this event. The multiple cycling events are expected to attract 40,000 to 50,000 visitors, from around the world, to downtown Winston-Salem. It would be nice to have the exterior completed for the visitors and maybe turn-on the exterior lighting, which was tested a few months ago.

Alternative Transportation:
Cycling Research:
Winston-Salem researcher and cyclist Alain Bertoni will conduct research to see if there are barriers or facilitators to cycling in Winston-Salem's African-American community. "Our future goal is to potentially do a project in which we encourage cycling as a means of improving health. In our country, the typical demographic of cycling in a lot of studies is men more than women, upper socioeconomic status more than lower socioeconomic status, and whites more than blacks.” Bertoni has applied for and received funding for a pilot study he hopes to begin this spring, interviewing 20 to 40 African-American families about whether they ride.
U.S. Bicycle Route 80:
Local leaders would like to complete the segment connecting Salem Lake to Kernersville and the county line in the next ten years.
Volunteers Needed - USA Cycling National Championships:
If you would like to help with the USA Cycling National Championships and the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic, send an email to
info@winstonsalemcycling.com You will receive free concert tickets to the Gears and Guitars Downtown Music Festival and I think they have a free T-shirt.
Salem Creek Greenway Extension:
This project would connect the bicycle paths in lower downtown to Forsyth Tech. No start date has been set for this 1.17 mile project, which would complete the connection of all of Winston-Salem's colleges & universities by bicycle and connect them all to downtown.
U.S. Olympic Cycling Training Center:
Do you want to support the National Cycling Center construction project and meet cycling celebrities? Here is your chance! The NCC will have a VIP Ride with Bob Roll, Robbie Ventura, George Hincapie and Christian Vande Velde through some of the most beautiful terrain in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. Sign up now for VIP Packages for this ride and other events during May 24-30. Proceeds benefit USA Cycling's under construction National Cycling Center in downtown Winston-Salem, a 501c3 not for profit organization.
