Interesting tilt-shifted pictures, e_r. Pico Wheel Service was at 910 W Pico Boulevard. The tracks in the foreground turned into Georgia Street, where you'd have found the streetcar barn seen in the last picture (and probably the first). We took a look at this area and the streetcar barn in post #21064. None of the buildings on that section of W Pico survive, and the streetcar barn is now a memory beneath the Convention Center.

There needs to be a whole greater investigation into the hermit life of pre-hippie LA!

You know, I remember there being some sort of minor brouhaha recently over the posting of "non-building" images on SSP, so, after uploading that collection of Tuan clippings, felt like I had to balance it out, I guess...a little 3x5" amateur snap pulled from a binder of mine, dated on verso 24 July 1932.

It was in the same area as Chinatown (the 'New Chinatown'). There's still an 'Italian Hall' there.

The 1923 CD seems to be the only one which lists the Societa Prodotti Nazionali Inc at 210-212 North Spring Street.

That address puts it right in the middle of the Temple Block. Here's a much early (circa 1890) picture.

Back then, 210 N Spring Street was home to R E Morey, a gents furnishings goods store and shirt manufacturer.

A little more on Harry Herman. The first picture shows the outside of his living quarters. The caption of this 1937 picture says that Harry was 70 at the time. It also points out that "a calender [sic] and clock are tacked on the wall of his flimsy abode."

Harry apparently once had a wife named Pearl. The news clipping about their divorce spells their surname as "Hermann".

There seems to be some uncertainty over Harry's age. The caption for this picture says "Happy Harry Herman, the 77 year old hermit of Hollywood, takes his daily morning walk in Los Angeles. Throughout the year, he wears nothing else than his loincloth and sandals. California USA. Photograph November 4, 1933." I first found this picture in the blog named under the picture, but it appears to originate from gettyimages.com.

Despite the similarity in their names, I was disappointed to learn that Herman's Hermits, the '60s English pop band, did not take their name from Harry Herman.
