Interesting tilt-shifted pictures, e_r. Pico Wheel Service was at 910 W Pico Boulevard. The tracks in the foreground turned into Georgia Street, where you'd have found the streetcar barn seen in the last picture (and probably the first). We took a look at this area and the streetcar barn in post #21064. None of the buildings on that section of W Pico survive, and the streetcar barn is now a memory beneath the Convention Center.

Believe it or not, the man with the long hair and the beard isn't a summer of love 'hippie'...he's the "Lookout Mountain Hermit" Leroy Walsh aka Tuan, and the date is 1936!!

ebay

-It appears he beat up a couple men. (not sure why this warranted a front page photo)

detail / close up

Does anyone have any information on Tuan/ (Lorendoc...have you heard stories of this guy?

Tuan looks just like every trust-fund/tennis-playing/country-club/stoner-dude populating my childhood years of the late 70s.

Of COURSE he was acquitted! These non-believers got grease drippings on his white trousers!

Thanks for finding the clippings Beaudry.

HossC, here's another LARy photo I found last night. (it doesn't have that tilt-shift effect but the scan is still pretty impressive)

"West 7th Street, Route R"

ebay

I appreciate the aerial showing the Hotel Stillman CityBoydoug. Now I can place it in it's surroundings.

That's a nice large house behind the trolley on the right.

Of course L.A. couldn't have just one hermit.

Meet Harry Herman, the hermit of Hollywood Hills.

ebay

1937

At 98 lbs...Harry was probably more of a pacifist than Tuan.

There needs to be a whole greater investigation into the hermit life of pre-hippie LA!

You know, I remember there being some sort of minor brouhaha recently over the posting of "non-building" images on SSP, so, after uploading that collection of Tuan clippings, felt like I had to balance it out, I guess...a little 3x5" amateur snap pulled from a binder of mine, dated on verso 24 July 1932.

Hi Steve srk: Thanks for stopping by and settin' me correct. Oh Lordy this is my second mistake in as many weeks. Sorry for my goofity, goof-goof. It must be my age. Lovely Cadillac.!

It was in the same area as Chinatown (the 'New Chinatown'). There's still an 'Italian Hall' there.

Beautiful amateur snap from 1932 Beaudry. Thanks for sharing it with us.

The 1923 CD seems to be the only one which lists the Societa Prodotti Nazionali Inc at 210-212 North Spring Street.

LAPL

That address puts it right in the middle of the Temple Block. Here's a much early (circa 1890) picture.

USC Digital Library

Back then, 210 N Spring Street was home to R E Morey, a gents furnishings goods store and shirt manufacturer.

Detail of picture above.

After my original post, I remembered this line from the first episode of 'Police Squad' :

"Our next stop was a neighborhood known as Little Italy."

Paramount Television

And being a Los Angeles hermit, Tuan of course owned an automobile.

LOL. I missed the part where he had his own car. That's quite a hermit.

As for Robert A. Heinlein-

A Free night's stay at the Ambassador Hotel for anyone who can locate Mr. Heinlein's residence in the Lookout Mountain area.

A little more on Harry Herman. The first picture shows the outside of his living quarters. The caption of this 1937 picture says that Harry was 70 at the time. It also points out that "a calender [sic] and clock are tacked on the wall of his flimsy abode."

eBay

Was this Harry's bathroom?

eBay

Harry apparently once had a wife named Pearl. The news clipping about their divorce spells their surname as "Hermann".

eBay

There seems to be some uncertainty over Harry's age. The caption for this picture says "Happy Harry Herman, the 77 year old hermit of Hollywood, takes his daily morning walk in Los Angeles. Throughout the year, he wears nothing else than his loincloth and sandals. California USA. Photograph November 4, 1933." I first found this picture in the blog named under the picture, but it appears to originate from gettyimages.com.

hollywoodwalker.blogspot.com

Despite the similarity in their names, I was disappointed to learn that Herman's Hermits, the '60s English pop band, did not take their name from Harry Herman.
