Made by Schwartz, Maurice [Los Angeles based custom car builder].
Between 1947 and 1949, MGM Studios ordered six Series 75 Cadillac chassis from Hillcrest Cadillac, the Beverly Hills dealer. These chassis were dispatched to Maurice Schwartz to receive custom, “woodie” bodies.

This 6-door Cadillac station wagon, (2nd unit), was built for cowboy star-singer Gene Autry,

Isn't this Donald Crisp, who played the father in "How Green Was My Valley"?

Like yesterday, I'm only posting about half of this Julius Shulman photoset. It's "Job 2214: Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America Union Building (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1956".

Here's the entrance from a different angle.

And a longer view.

Now for the interior pictures. The chairs look like they're ready for a meeting or presentation of some kind.

This is the the same room, but the table layout here makes me think that this could also be a dining room.

In case you can't read the street sign on the far left, I'll reveal the location below.

This sculpture is shown from both sides, but I've got no idea who it is.

All from Getty Research Institute

The sign in the penultimate picture above is on the corner of 25th and Hill Streets. The distinctive corrugated cladding has gone, but the building is still standing at 2501 S Hill Street. I preferred it without the fence, but at least they've made an effort to make it look better.

It seems somewhat shallow, it backs up to a hillside, and the window pattern could possibly match. I know it's behind trees on the current street view but check out 2007:

GSV

Looking at more modern street views it's clear that there is a LOT of fill in the windows, and although the resolution is junk on the old street view,
you can tell from newer ones that the window closest to the front used to be much taller, like the old photo. I'm betting the other two windows on that side
also have some amount of fill.

Inconclusive, but I'd say it's at least possible that this is your building from the old photo.
I believe you're correct ProphetM. I noticed that building too, but for some reason didn't connect the two. (the hillside behind should have been a big clue)

Here's the view I had saved, mostly because I thought it was an intriguing structure.

gsv

This building has suffered so much....the awful stucco...& as you mentioned, the numerous windows that have been filled.
Sometimes I think buildings should just be put out of their misery.

one last look

hmmm....it was stucco even then.

And thanks for this HossC

detail / http://ladbs.org/services/check-stat...ilding-records

I see that it has a rather deep basement. 18" I wonder if there are any stale crackers left down there?
__

so I.m still confused about the later brick building. Did you guys decide where it was located?

While I had the Googlemobile at 25th and Hill, I pointed the camera down W 25th Street. I think the white building on the corner is a parking garage.

GSV

When I went to get a closer look at the three-story apartments buildings, I found the one on the left completely obscured from every angle in the only GSV image that's available (2009).

GSV

Luckily, Bing Maps shows both buildings clearly. First, the one on the right.

Bing streetside

And here's the mystery building.

Bing streetside

Checking the building records, it looks like both structures date back to 1912. 225 and 229 W 25th Street were the Luana and Dixie Apartments respectively - the names still appear up until the 1968 CD. Here they are in the Abbott [sic] Kinney Tract on the 1914 Baist map. Note that Hill Street didn't extend this far south until years later.

Excellent discovery Hoss. It's good to see that Luana and Dixie have survived.....at 104 years old!

I did wonder whether this is the staircase from the pictures above.

It took me awhile, but I finally found proof this is the same spiral staircase as in the Shulman photograph(s).

I came across this color photograph in a real-estate ad for boutique space facing the inner courtyard.

Although we only see an edge of the staircase, you can see the similarities, especially the iron 'rods' that extend below the railings.

for comparison

The color photograph is from this ad.

http://www.westsideretail.com/11940_...vard_Flyer.pdf

hmmmm.....I just noticed it's pointing to the building next door, which is 11950. Huh?

*OK, I just looked at Hoss's aerial again. It appears that you have to go through 11950 to reach the inner courtyard of 11940!

This can't be right....can it?

Here's the building the ad is pointing to. The street number is plain as day (directly over the entrance in vintage silver letters is 11950)

" Gemological Institute of America, Los Angeles, Richard Neutra 1956. Rupert Desmond Henly, 1957"

Pretty cool huh!

The numbers 11940 hadn't been placed on the metal disc yet in Mr. Shulman's photograph from 1956.

Is this what you're thinking of sadykatie2?

http://robotcosmonaut.tumblr.com/image/1399863652

My quick research on the infamous photograph is that this ballroom isn't anywhere in the Stanley Hotel/Overlook Hotel.

So did Kubrick use an old photograph of a celebration at the Biltmore? There doesn't seem to be an answer on the internet (unless I just haven't found it yet)

& with movie magic, Jack Nicholson has been placed front and center. spooky

North Hollywood Sportsman's Club

While we are still in "Woodie World', here is another of photo from the 8 x10 negs I saved from the trash at North Hollywood Photo back in 1959.

I cannot pinpoint the exact location but it appears to be on Lankershim Boulevard.

From the club website: On January 9th 1939, a group of sportsmen from North Hollywood, California, formed the North Hollywood Sportsman's club. Today, our current members maintain that legacy and seek to introduce new people to the clay target sports we have come to enjoy.

Cheers,
Jack

Straus Bakery? Lewis and Mathilda Strauss? 11216 Magnolia Blvd.? But - is there another name (or two) on the structure, including "US" Bakery and a four digit street number? Melvin Strauss 4915 Lankershim?

A block away, at 1506 Blue Jay Way, June 1962, a George Barris photoshoot. 1506 BJW was the then residence of Tim Leimert, son of Leimert Park founder/developer, Walter Leimert. Interesting interview of Tim Leimert that touches upon Leimert park, Doheny, Charles Manson and this photo shoot. >> http://www.leimertparkmovie.com/medi...imLeimert.html

Curious about the storage tank, e.g., its contents, construction date and who maintains it.

Question...

Anybody seen or heard anything concerning a Marmion Hotel? Near Marmion Way and Figueroa. Anybody? Anybody? Mr. Spicolli? (rumor has it about four stories, brick.)

Thanks for digging up the recent picture of the spiral staircase at the Gemological Institute of America, e_r.

--------------------

All the Julius Shulman photosets I'm coming across at the moment seem to be quite large, so I've been selective again today. I'll start with three of the color images from "Job 5459: John Portman & Associates, Bonaventure Hotel (Los Angeles, Calif.),1977".

Several of the color shots were similar to each other, and there's a lot of overlap in the black & white images too. With that in mind, I've picked out two arty views which aren't in the color set.

The subject of the Marmion Hotel came up just over a year ago. The picture below was posted by e_r, and at the time I thought that the hotel disappeared between 1972 and 1980. The address was 3903 Marmion Way.

Now that we have access to the building records, it looks like the demo permit was issued in 1968. As far as I remember, we never found any more pictures.

19 year old Hudson Esbonis lived in the Marion Hotel/Apt. in 1940.

He isn't famous or anything, but it's the only information I found after googling the hotel's address.

Thank you Hoss. That's the one. I had a faint memory of it being here but couldn't get it to come up on my screen.
