Here's the courtyard...
I did wonder whether this is the staircase from the pictures above.

It took me awhile, but I finally found proof this is the same spiral staircase as in the Shulman photograph(s).
I came across this color photograph in a real-estate ad for boutique space facing the inner courtyard.
Although we only see an edge of the staircase, you can see the similarities, especially the iron 'rods' that extend below the railings.
for comparison

The color photograph is from this ad.

hmmmm.....I just noticed it's pointing to the building next door, which is 11950. Huh?
*OK, I just looked at
Hoss's aerial again. It appears that you have to go through 11950 to reach the inner courtyard of 11940!
This can't be right....can it?
Here's the building the ad is pointing to. The street number is plain as day (directly over the entrance in vintage silver letters is 11950)

" Gemological Institute of America, Los Angeles, Richard Neutra 1956. Rupert Desmond Henly, 1957"
Pretty cool huh!
The numbers 11940 hadn't been placed on the metal disc yet in Mr. Shulman's photograph from 1956.
