I feel the same way about every power centre. Approaching Beacon Hill in Calgary you can actually see the facade supports.

I was quite bothered by it back when this was done, and time hasn't made it any easier to accept. I have to assume it was completely a financial decision, an aging parish hall that needs work and has outlived its usefulness to the church combined with basically no rules requiring buildings like this to be preserved. I suppose the architects thought they were doing a good thing by incorporating some of the original materials into the building (including the cornerstone), but in the end it seemed more like a slap in the face than honouring what was there before.

FWIW, height is restricted in that part of town due to sightlines from the Citadel, but I would have no idea whether that affected the design or not.

Either way, it sucks...

The Beacon Hill power centre is much worse than the one in Mississauga IMO, though only by virtue of location. The latter is on lands designated for employment (though probably shouldn't be large scale retail) and bordered by a highway hydro corridor and rail line. Beacon Hill is actually on top of a hill with fantastic views - blows my mind that they decided a power centre was an appropriate use for the site. There is a landfill site nearby but the closest portions of it look to be in the later stages of rehabilitation.

Here's the view from the back(!) of the retail buildings, and it continues along much of the site: https://goo.gl/maps/W8yv2z5BZSaapDfK8

And having the back end of a power centre loom ominously over your suburban home: https://goo.gl/maps/jTSUhmeUQkTJAsnV8

In a way, it reminds me of the Interchange map in Escape From Tarkov.

The view was already ruined by the sea of beige suburbia. The NW is the ugliest part of the city by virtue of the hills and lack of trees. A beautiful natural landscape completely spoiled.

Man, that is one strange church. It looks post modern by sheer virtue of it's unconventional....shabby awkward design and well, the colours. That grass around it may not be that strange because its a suburb....but the way it
s positioned next to the entrance and into the nook of the wing to the right makes me dumbfounded that an architect simply overlooked the land for the perceived function of the building.

Could it have been a building that was built for another use, repurposed into a church?

I believe you have just coined the term for a new architectural movement: Shabby Awkward

That church in Gatineau is atrocious. I usually give shabby or plain churches a pass because quite often the congregation doesn't have the money for something nice or whatever. But in that case the building looks like was designed with more than a minimal budget... it was just spent in a way that resulted in a hideous piece of junk that looks more like a small town community centre. Yech.

Behold Calgary's new shame:

The Hub!

The worst part is how prominent of a location it is. You can literally see it for miles and there's no other towers nearby to obscure it. Watch for it on CFL broadcasts as it's right by McMahon stadium. As with most highrises of this horrid quality it is student residences for nearby post secondary institutions.

Calgary should have learned from the mistakes of the Borg Cube!

Skinny Borg Cube does not = nice Borg Cube. No it equals

I saw that building in Calgary going up while watching football on TV and I was wondering what it was... it certainly stands out.

Yes Gatineau has some doozies. I think these may have been posted before (a long time ago), but here goes.

This is police headquarters. (Not too far from where I live.) I guess it acts as a deterrent for crime - who would want spend the night here?

Château Nouvel Âge - indoor diving centre, wellness spa and pediatric clinic. All businesses owned by the same family.

Yeah you could see it during the Grey cup broadcast. Sadly the spandrel sections might help for once as it will give a more uniform and connected looking design to the haphazard window placement.
