ETHIOPIA (4): Lalibela

MY THREADS

The fourth of my Ethiopia threads (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) takes me to the Christian north of the country, into the highlands. Lalibela is an amazing place nestled in the hills, surrounded by stunning landscapes. It is famous for its churches carved into the rocky ground, and is a holy sight within the Christian world. Although the major tourist hotspot within Ethiopia, Lalibela is far from touristy compared to other of the worlds great sites. I am surprised they aren’t more famous, and could easily be the 8th wonder of the ancient world as far as I am concerned.

The town itself was small, but felt like a different country from the harsh, flat south. I almost felt like I could have been in the highlands of Morocco.

I have also included a few at the end from Addis Ababa. Wasn’t sure where else to show them so stick them in here. They are of Timkat, the Ethiopian epiphany (more on that in my next thread).

Gives meaning to the phrase "dirt poor". Looks like dirt is the primary export. But I love the people. Very colorful and generally decently happy looking. Interesting to see non-industrialized countries after only ever being exposed to big-box strip malls and McDonalds culture.

Stunning scenery.

Great pics. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful tour.

This child's eye's seem hypnotic:

Any idea what caused the marks on this structure?

Thanks for the experience.
