Reinventing the Crescent is a massive initiative to reform the land along the Mississippi River in New Orleans into a series of public parks, in a historically sensitive way that honors the port uses that allowed the city to flourish. Excepting land still controlled by the Port of New Orleans and the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, the master plan includes park development along nearly 5 miles of waterfront property from Jackson Avenue to the Industrial Canal. It will eventually include gardens, fountains, interactive pavilions, plazas, cafes, and exhibitions of green technology like solar lights and wind turbines.
The first phase, to be called 'Downriver Park', stretches from Esplanade Avenue to Bartholomew Street. It encompasses numbers 9-11 on the above map. Construction is planned to begin December 2009, with completion in Summer 2011. In addition to landscaping by Hargreaves Associates, it features a pedestrian bridge and interventions on an old wharf warehouse done by Michael Maltzan, and a spiritual pavilion and bridge by David Adjaye.
