Costs! It's apparantly cheaper to refurbish newer streetcars than the older ones they had on display. Money is usually the answer for most questions on why.

This is great for St Louis!

Agree that I would much rather see modern streetcars. Then it goes from being a cute, historic curiosity to being a modern transit line.

Progress on Metro's (Downtown) Civic Center Station.

This building will provide shelter and basic services for transit passengers and staff, and houses passenger and employee restrooms, transit employee offices, a small retail shop, and a passenger ticketing, information, and waiting area.

Amtrak, MetroBus, MetroLink, Madison County Transit (Illinois) and cabbies will converge at this site.

St. Louis City Hall, Scottrade Center, federal employment centers, Peabody Opera House and the Soldier's Memorial/Gateway Mall are near this station.

Just blocks away, the Soldier's Memorial is currently undergoing a $30-35-million renovation.

CORTEX Innovation District is finally getting that long-awaited light-rail transit station-plaza notch in its belt that it has been waiting for. Ground-breaking took place yesterday.

This is culminating along with the new Microsoft building and Aloft Hotel that are under development in CORTEX.

Construction of MetroLink station in Cortex area to begin next month
By Mark Schlinkmann
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

ST. LOUIS • Construction of a MetroLink station in the city's Cortex tech hub will begin next month, officials with the Metro transit system said Thursday.

John Nations, president and CEO of the Bi-State Development Agency — which oversees Metro — said plans call for opening the facility in late 2018.

Ray Friem, Metro's executive director, said he expects that the Bi-State board later this month will award contracts for the construction work for the $15 million project.

Pardon me, but I'm not sure about the purpose of this "trolley".

Do they have any significant tourism industry over there? Cause tourists would find it cute and picturesque, maybe like in New Orleans or San Francisco, but how actually convenient would it be to locals?

For example, what about the disabled in wheelchairs or young parents with their cumbersome baby strollers? You often see moms who have to use elevators here, while you run up or down the stairs, and when trains and platforms are not at grade, you often have to help them to be a gentleman, so you don't look like a rude scornful asshole...

Modern public transportation must be accessible and comfortable to anyone. Not to mention, clean too.

I sure hope their thing is successful enough (they'd better grow tourism), but I certainly won't recommend the same where I am.

If they have handicapped vans I don't see a problem. The key is actual mobility.

^ Wow those new Siemens cars look awesome in that rendering and an interesting side note-most of the Metrolink stations have high boarding platforms and this train in the rendering looks to be a low-floor vehicle.

Construction on the future $12-million CORTEX MetroLink Station is chugging along.

The new MetroLink station will serve the CORTEX Innovation Community and nearby tech and bioscience facilities, neighborhoods and businesses.

Regarding the Cortex station, why is it being built so far off of Boyle? What's is the logic of requiring that long slog? Seems like a lousy design both functionally and aesthetically.
