They should've just shut the CWB down altogether and been done with it. Instead we spent hundreds of millions to give it away to foreigners. Still in disgust reading the news articles about it today.

Their old store was pretty rough. I would rather see the Extra Foods building returned to a grocery. Hopefully they can find a tenant for the old store. Doesn't say who they bought the building from; the city or Loblaws? Probably Loblaws if they are demanding that there be no grocery store.

Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford - P3 Award

I originally posted this in the Saskatoon thread, but figured it should be here as well:

Was awarded to Access Prairie Partnership, headed by Graham Construction.

Quote:
Access Prairies Partnership was the winning bidder. The consortium includes:
Graham Design Builders
Carillion Canada
Gracorp Capital Advisors
Carillion Private Finance
Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning
WSP Canada

The Opposition New Democratic Party slammed the selection in a Monday news release, saying none of the major players are Saskatchewan companies. The businesses involved are based in the United Kingdom, Quebec, B.C., and Alberta. "Giving it to an international consortium with no Saskatchewan involvement is literally sending hundreds of millions of dollars to other economies instead of bolstering our own with this project," NDP deputy leader Trent Wotherspoon said in the news release. The government says the project will create more than 1,500 jobs in Saskatchewan.
Interesting that Wotherspoon is bemoaning the lack of local content in the group. Graham may now have their HQ in Calgary, but were founded in Moose Jaw and still have a tremendous presence in Saskatchewan. As well, WSP Engineering has a large local office staffed with individuals that have many years of experience providing consulting engineering services in Saskatchewan.

This is a damn nice building... it would have fit in perfectly right on Broadway.

To the best of my knowledge, this is easily the best office building in Manitoba outside of Winnipeg. SCU has upped their game compared to some of their earlier branches which, while substantial, lacked the appealing design of their HQ. Congratulations Steinbach!

From the story that snowmobile linked to:

Haha, I know I'm kind of stepping out of line there

It's not going to win any awards or get magazine profiles written about it, but it's still an impressively urbane corporate office for a small town's main drag.

Had SCU been in a position to build a corporate HQ of this magnitude in the 1980s, you can bet it would have been a sprawling one storey building surrounded by parking, out on the edge of town.

This pretty much is at the edge of town, though. There's not much between SCU and La Broquerie.

^ Still on the main drag though, nestled in among the other businesses. In my scenario, the SCU would have gone up halfway between Steinbach and Ste. Anne or Kleefeld...

Yes this could've easily been built like their two Winnipeg locations in the mall area of town.

This article says they were thinking about moving to the outskirts.

They demolished the movie theater and curling club which have since been rebuilt.

They are all attached to the TG Smith Centre.

Ah, makes sense.

But is Main street still really the main drag in Steinbach? It definitely once was. It's pretty old and vacant these days, though. I really consider the 11 the Main drag now. It's pretty well where all the recent development has happened.

Either way. I'm always struck by what a nice community Steinbach is. Always so well kept.

Steinbach could reach over 100,000 in 50 years (2064) based on a 4.2% growth rate.

There seems to be a surprising amount of opposition to Yancoal's proposed potash mine near Earl Grey. Maybe it is just CBC's bias. They do not appear to have interviewed any business people nor the farmers who sold land.

Edit, as suspected:

Being from this area.......the article is way overblown! There have been more meetings and excitement from the locals than the view represent in this article. Communities of Strasbourg and Southey have had nothing but positive meetings.. Very odd reporting......makes me wonder!

5 signs of trouble for Saskatchewan's economy in oil slump

A good read regarding the dangers of putting one's eggs in one economic basket

5 signs of trouble for Saskatchewan's economy in oil slump

Many said province could withstand economic blows from oil and gas, but there are troubling signs

When crude oil prices began to plummet, economists comforted Saskatchewan residents that their diversified economy would safeguard them during the oil and gas slump.

In fact, Saskatchewan's economy isn't that diverse.

The province relies heavily on natural resources: fuel, food and fertilizer.

And while economists were banking on the agriculture and potash industries to offset energy losses, they're no longer confident that will happen.
