This doesn't affect Xpresspost, I presume?

I only use snail mail for companies that can't seem to get e-mail billing notices to me, like Shaw. Been doing electronic bill payment since you had to install the bank program from a floppy disk.

Still sad though. At one point I thought it would be a nice job for me, but could never get a shot.

Good idea in theory, but the capital outlay to set up all of these community mailboxes can't be cheap.

Last time I checked (at least 10 years ago), Canada Post was running at a 1-2% profit margin, which seemed ok to me.

I take it by this move that they are losing money on letters, not parcels.

It's a good time to stock up on the stamps that don't expire before the price jumps. I believe Costco sells a 100 roll for about $60.

Not really a big deal in my opinion. A lot of places already rely on a community box..

My house built in 1986 has had a community mailbox since it was built. Haven't missed door-to-door delivery one bit, and I think its importance is vastly overblown. Xpresspost is well suited to this setup.

This is good, even better would be to privatise Canada Post and end their monopoly on mail delivery.

In France we have mail Saturday delivery and open Post Offices on Saturdays. Has that come to Canada yet? (just an honest question)

Those who want door front delivery should pay the extra cost.

My post guy will come to my door for oversized packages if I answer, even though I'm in a condo. But I'm never home when they come.

I wish they would do something around better delivery of packages. This whole 'leave a notice card and then go to the post office after 1pm tomorrow' business is ridiculous. They should just keep tracked packages at the post office and either email or phone people when they're ready for pickup since most people aren't home during the day. Community mailboxes don't work for a number of reasons.

You're quite free to use UPS or FedEx or any other private courier to deliver your letter or package.

Don't give the NDP any ideas. That would actually sound like a good plan to them.

WRT the hassle of collecting a package - That's why you get packages delivered to your office.

That's your argument against privatisation and ending the government monopoly on mail? Use a courier service?
