Oatmeal, a farmer told me it relaxed the pigs and was an anti depressant. No shit, true story.

In Newfoundland we boil our oatmeal, imported from Boston, in salt water and serve it with toutons and beans. Here is a relevant picture of St. Johns from the 1930s, a YouTube folk music video, an article that references Newfoundland nationalism, a selfie of mine, and a drunken rant about Winnipeg.

(Love a good parody thread lol. I'll let a Canada section mod deal with it)

The modern conception of breakfast is a conspiracy foisted upon us by a twisted combination of 19th century moralism and capitalist lobbying! Resist!!!

I'm actually only partly joking, too: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeands...food-lifestyle

Is it okay if I put apple slices in my oatmeal, or does that make me a wannabe-American? Should I drizzle it with maple syrup or is that indicative of Toronto's lack of homegrown culture? Maybe I should say f$#k it all and put salami, bokchoy and curry powder in it, and give the ROC the middle finger!

Apples are definitely American. You can use maple syrup but just acknowledge that really only represents Southern Ontario and Quebec, maybe parts of Vermont. It completely excludes Newfoundland and you are not allowed to eat oatmeal in Toronto that does not represent Newfoundland.

Currently 1C and sunny.

I had both apples (sliced Empire apples) and pure Quebec Maple syrup in my President's Choice Organic (wife purchased) Oatmeal this morning. And some Natrel Milk. Am I sufficiently Canadian? Discuss.

I could always add anchovies, but now we're entering pizza territory. What's next I've got to add bitumen to my cereal??

I didn't have time for breakfast and feel rather grumpy as a result.

Trying to refrain from posting too much on here because of that!

Typical Quebecois, trying to separate a whole meal! My Canada includes breakfast.

It all depends:

Obviously in Quebec, you'd eat crepes, but only with local "pure laine" sirop d'erable all the while telling yourself that no one eats breakfast like you.

And while in the ROC you would eat an oat based cereal, it would of course have to unique in each location:

In NFLD, you'd eat oatmeal as described by SHH, but instead of sweetener, you'd put Screech on it. Just because.

In NS, you'd probably eat porridge because you're still clinging to your British history and how great Halifax could have been if only the National Policy hadn't been enacted.

In PEI, no one really cares what you'd eat for breakfast, but we all know you'd be eating it while watching some Anne of Green Gables spin off.

In NB you might eat oatmeal or farine d'avoine, who knows. But for sure it would be Irving brand!

In Ontario, you'd only eat instant oatmeal with no flavouring, since we all know that Ontario has no history (everything is rushed) or local flavour.

In Manitoba you'd eat oatmeal blended with oats grown in Ontario and the West. You'd also eat them in a bowl that was once considered that largest "bowl in the west" but alas has been surpassed by many other bowls since the opening of the Panama canal.

In Saskatchewan, you live for "OATMEAL PRIDE" even though no one else really knows what that means.

In Alberta, you'd harvest the oats yourself using a combine that buns an incredible amount of natural gas and for every bowl you eat, you'd send 10 bowls to everyone else (with 8 going to Quebec, even though they only eat the crepes).

In BC, you'd eat only local, 110% organic oats, grown on a farm owned by someone across the pacific, all the while telling yourself that this is the best "oatmeal on earth".

Milk > water for oatmeal. Has to be a side as part of a larger breakfast though. Oatmeal is deceptively low-calorie and it would take an hour to eat 500 calories worth.

Only a Macintosh (a true Canadian apple) may be used as garnish. Wannabe Americanism is a regional and environmental element that you may not be able to escape.

It is bourgeoisie to use maple syrup if it is not indigenous to your region. I am free to use it where I am situated, you may or may not, mileage varies.

Toronto doesn't produce nearly enough oatmeal. The media doesn't even pay attention to it. The only time the CBC will mention oatmeal is if it's francophone or being chewed by an American or Newfoundlander.

*****

An aside, we can't use milk in our oatmeal. It's part of our terms of union, right below our fiercly-negotiated right to legally produce and sell yellow margarine.

Oatmeal topped with peameal bacon is the obvious Toronto answer.

Actually oatmeal topped with maple syrup and bacon sounds pretty good. My grocery store makes donuts like that.

Oatmeal with two servings of smoked pork on the side for K-W. Alternatively, crepes wrapped around pork breakfast sausage. Possibly with some extra pork...
