The best thing that ever happened to Mohawk College is leaving, Rob MacIsaac. Mohawk College lost is HHS gain.

Disappointing news for Mohawk. He's improved that school so much during his time there.

HHS includes Hamilton General, Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre, McMaster Children's, McMaster University Medical Centre, St. Peter's, West Lincoln Memorial and Chedoke hospitals as well as an urgent care centre on Main Street West.
Is St. Joe's NOT part of HHS?

Definitely a loss for Mohawk, but he's got the school set on a terrific course.

I think HHS will benefit greatly not only because of MacIsaac's capable leadership and visioning, but because he's from "outside" the medical community - a fresh perspective is never a bad thing.

That's a nice little pay rise. Do you think there's something else he's angling towards? I certainly don't think he'll be throwing his hat in the ring for mayor any time soon.

He's too smart to do that.

Mohawk announces Brantford campus departure

http://www.thespec.com/news-story/43...pus-departure/

On Tuesday, the college announced plans to relocate all remaining full-time programs to Hamilton this fall.

The move, which will affect around 350 community service students as well as 20 staff, will save the college $1 million annually and help it curb a projected $5-million shortfall in its 2014-15 budget.

Mohawk has slowly been phasing out of Brantford since 2010, when it relocated its skilled trades program to Stoney Creek. It has since moved its graphics, justice and wellness programs to Hamilton, as well as closing its Elgin Street campus.

I took advertising at Mohawk and wondered by the graphic arts program and their computers were in Brantford instead of complementing the advertising program's creative classes on Fennel.

Mohawk College bus terminal work underway

$3.3 million project going in near Fennell and West 5th

By Mark Newman | September 21, 2015

Taking the bus to the Fennell campus at Mohawk College will be a different experience by the time December rolls around.

Work began recently on a $3.3 million transit terminal on college property near the corner of Fennell and West 5th.

“it’s going to be a major transit terminal up here on the Mountain for students to come on to this campus or connect with other transit routes,” said Wayne Poirier, vice president of student services at Mohawk of the terminal that will feature four bus bays and four large bus shelters.

It will also serve the West 5th campus of St. Joseph’s Healthcare across the street.

“This is the first phase of a partnership development between the City of Hamilton and Mohawk College,” said Christine Lee-Morrison, manager of transit strategy and infrastructure at city hall.

The project is being paid for by the provincial Metrolinx Quick Wins fund.

Poirier said HSR buses will access the terminal, slated to be completed by the end of November, via Fennell and West 5th and all bus traffic at the west Mountain campus will be picking up and dropping off passengers at the new location.

To make up for the parking spots lost by the new terminal, the college has reconfigured the parking area on the south side and added new parking spaces.

Poirier said the new terminal will eventually link up with bus service to the new west harbor Go station.

That will enable students from the GTA to come to the Fennell campus by Go train and a bus connection.

“It’s going to open us up to all the Go routes,” he said.

The transit centre has been in the works for the past five years.

A June 2 letter to city officials from Deborah Brown, vice president of corporate services at Mohawk College and attached to a July 21 report to city council, noted discussions with the city and Metrolinx about a multi-modal transportation hub at the Fennell campus began in 2010.

The letter notes the college has been unable to find a private sector developer to build the multi-use building that was originally part of the project and wished to proceed with the bays and other transit infrastructure so as to meet the 24-month window that’s part of the college’s transportation services licence agreement with the city.

Mohawk spokesperson Jay Robb said the college may revisit seeking a private sector partner for the multi-use building at some point in the future.

This is the building that the college is waiting for a private sector developer to build...

Without seeing pictures I can't imagine how it takes $3.3 million and five years of planning for four 'large' bus shelters with no building attached?
And they talk about funding it with the Metrolinx Quick Wins fund!

To make up for lost parking they reconfigured and added spots elsewhere... I guess they don't expect anyone to actually use the buses instead of arriving by car as they have since the college was built in the 1970s.

The explanation of being able to provide future connections to GO doesn't make sense since Mohawk already has a connection to the Hunter St. and West Harbour GO stations via the 20 A-Line route.

I'd love to see improved transit amenities and connections but it looks like they are just moving the already convenient stops in front of the main doors to the far corner of the college property.

Four routes will use the transit hub, as per LikeHamilton's post in August.

"The Mohawk College Transit Terminal will include bus bays and terminals, as well as rider amenities such as shelters, real-time service information and ticket machines. The new transportation hub will be located at the corner of West 5th and Fennell and will be used by four HSR routes. Routes 20 A-LINE EXPRESS, 21 UPPER KENILWORTH, 33 SANATORIUM, and 35 COLLEGE will all use the new terminal."

A lot has changed since I graduated in 2011. This building was going to start construction next year. Looks like there is still lots of room for growth.

Pictures by me.

Ottawa gives Mohawk College $20M for new technology lab building

http://www.thespec.com/news-story/68...-lab-building/

Mohawk College is set to receive $20 million from the federal government for new infrastructure at its Fennell campus.

Filomena Tassi, MP for Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas along with MPP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale, Ted McMeekin, made the announcement Friday morning. The ministers were highlighting the benefits of its new Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund.

Mohawk will break ground on a new Centre for Partnership and Innovation. It will build and renovate 120,000 square feet of labs and classrooms with a focus on technology. Construction will include a new 90,000 square foot building, the largest addition to the campus since its doors opened five decades ago.

"The Government of Canada's record-setting $20 million investment in Mohawk will support the largest ever renewal of labs and classrooms in our 50-year history," said Mohawk College President Ron McKerlie in a statement. "This renewal will allow Mohawk to educate more students than ever before in high-demand technology programs and put our students to work with even more industry partners on job-creating and prosperity-building applied research projects."

Construction will begin in October with the building expected to be open in Fall 2018. It will also be the area's first zero carbon building, generating potentially more energy than it consumes.

Thank God they left the birds in the image. That really makes it...

Not really sure how I feel about the cantilevered roof.
