Queen Mary to open Ship Model Gallery, plans maritime museum
When the Queen Mary in Long Beach opens its new Ship Model Gallery on Thursday, look for a miniature Winston Churchill.
The tiny former British prime minister appears with a top hat strolling on the deck of a 20-foot-long shipbuilder's model of the Queen Mary. During World War II, Churchill crossed the Atlantic Ocean three times on the ship.
The new model gallery is part of a much more ambitious plan for the landmark hotel aboard the ship, which has been in Long Beach since 1967. The plan is to create a 65,000-square-foot maritime museum and learning center aboard the ship.

Clicking on that link that San Frangelino posted, scrolling down to the bottom, the same company has a rather large mixed use mid-rise/high rise combo for Long Beach apparently in the pre construction phase. never even heard of it before. Its called "Long Beach phase 2"......If my viewing of the rendering is correct, this is at the intersection of Broadway and Long beach blvd. in the heart of downtown next to the blue line station.
And by large I mean Large for Long Beach standards.
Regarding the last photo, I love what they are doing to Pine Square Apartments, now that the old movie theater is closed. The the bottom part of building facing Pacific Avenue looks so much more inviting to pedestrians and not so dead, now they being converted into Lofts. That blank wall was just so depressing before, I hated walking past there
The Pike Outlets to Celebrate Grand Reopening this Weekend in Long Beach
Two new clothing retailers are expected to open in the next few months at The Pike Outlets in downtown Long Beach, an official said Friday.
Columbia Sportswear and Cotton-On are scheduled to open by early January, Rose Barrantes, general manager at The Pike Outlets, said during a morning press conference to announce the grand reopening of the Shoreline Drive-based shopping and retail center.
The reopening celebration takes place through Saturday and includes live music, free Ferris Wheel rides and various sales at H&M, Converse and Restoration Hardware.
The Pike opened in 2003 but has struggled to draw and retain retailers and consumers. But two years ago, DDR, the Ohio-based company that operates The Pike, attracted Restoration Hardware in hopes of turning around the troubled development. Securing the high-end home furnishings store was the first step to re-envision and rebrand the Pike as an outlet mall, said DDR spokesman Matthew Schuler.
Since then, Nike, Forever 21, H&M and Gap Factory have opened at the outlet mall.

Huge Entertainment District to Surround Queen Mary in Long Beach
The Queen Mary, docked in Long Beach for 49 years, is all of a sudden in for some big changes. The ship's just changed hands and the new lessees, Los Angeles-based investment firm Urban Commons, have secured a 66-year "master lease" for the ship, which they'll be remodeling, but they'll also be altering the land all around the QM. They're planning to eventually build out a "bustling retail, dining and entertainment district" on the 45 acres surrounding the ship, according to a release announcing the new leaseholders.
But first, there will be upgrades to the old ocean liner. All the "enhancements" should be finished by the middle of next year, with the ship staying open for both hotel guests and regular touristy ones during the remodeling.
The second phase of the project will transform the "underutilized oceanfront land" that’s next to the ship, turning it into as much of a destination as the ship has been. Long Beach's vice mayor says in a release for the project that she is happy to have Urban Commons as a "a collaborative partner" in the process to reinvigorate the area around the iconic ship. The planning process for the development seems to be in the earliest stages now.
This isn't the only major project headed for Long Beach's waterfront. The Aquarium of the Pacific just last month announced big plans to add a new 29,000-square-foot wing onto their existing facilities. The expansion looks like a glassy, blue whale and will hold a two-story, 300-seat theater and a new main entrance.
Can $250 million and a Ferris wheel finally turn the Queen Mary into a Long Beach tourist destination?
The company, Urban Commons, was chosen by the city late last year as the new leaseholder of the marine complex. The company formally took over the lease this week and is working with a task force appointed by the mayor on ideas for developing the surrounding 45 acres, now mostly parking lots.
While plans are still preliminary, company principal Taylor Woods said he would like to add to the 314 staterooms available on the ship. He envisions a 200-room landside boutique hotel, restaurants, a marina and an amphitheater for thousands to enjoy live music and events — all linked together by jogging and bike paths near the water.
Woods said a giant Ferris wheel is also a possibility, as long as it wouldn't detract from the Long Beach skyline.
Woods said Urban Commons has been holding substantive meetings with city officials and the Queen Mary Land Development Task Force and hopes to have a master plan for the city's approval within a year. He hopes the whole development will be finished within five years.

This is a great plan for Long Beach. Hopefully it is built. Hopefully the towers will include some with pointed tops and spires. Flat tops are boring. I love that old apartment tower on Ocean Blvd. with the pointed spire.
