Yeah that was the idea..

But people's interest in living close to the city and not 50km out have meant the final result will be quite frekish "hand shape wise"

I am so glad urban renewal didnt really occur in Europe. I wonder why it happened in America and didnt occur in Europe for the most part. Was it Americans fear of African Americans and thats why they destroyed the older parts of our cities or was it just Americans believing that America was the new world and therefor didnt need old buildings? hmmm

Now that Sweden also is connected makes that hand look even more deformed.

I know I'll get to Copenhagen in a few months (3 months in Europe starting in mid-April), whether or not we get to Stockholm is yet to be determined. If I were by myself I definitely would, but my buddy wants to spend quite a bit of time in France. I guess we'll see when the time comes.

Great thread, btw.

Glad you like it.

Stockholm is definitely worth the "detour" (despite being a bit out of the way if you're doing a continental Europe tour) - it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

It did happen here. Pretty much every city over 20k in Sweden had some urban renewal go down. New modernist downtowns for everyone! (i.e. minimalls with parking lots for the smaller towns) Usually pretty regretted now and most people don't understand why it was done at all.

Sweden is sort of "one of a kind" in (Western) Europe in that sense though.. sadly.

Stockholm from the air, with the islands and bridges, is really unique. And I loved seeing Oslo- I'm probably going to be there in one year at the University of Oslo, so maybe it's my future home!

I love Scandinavia. My favorite place. Great cities, great people. I've really never come across something I really didn't any of the times I've been out there.

shane453,
I hope you'll have a great time in Oslo. Good luck with the studies.

Snodrifter,
Glad you like it.

That modern waterfront neighborhood in Malmo looks really cool. I would normally detest that much modern architecture in one spot like that.

Great photos. My ancestors are from Norway, this thread strikes a chord with me.

What is the event happening in that fireworks photo (that's Oslo, right?) it's amazing...

Great pics! Scandinavian cities do look different than other cities.

About the ugly parts of Oslo, namely "Økern". The government presented a new plan for the area just a few days ago. They want to make Økern an attractive area for city development by laying the motorway underground

Maybe it's time this thread got a little bump. I might do some other cities soon, such as Göteborg (Sweden), Aarhus (Denmark), Bergen (Norway) and so on!
