It may have been nice and quaint, but that won't allow for an increase in passengers and services.

I hear Thunder Bay's building is similar in size and nature to Winnipeg's soon-to-be-defunct terminal.

That's what I want to know too.

Yeah ... the funniest things happen when private enterprise takes over.

What's the total pax/year capacity that YWG's going to have with its new terminal? And how many gates will it have compared to the present terminal?

I thought the present terminal built in the 1960s was designed to handle only 600K passengers a year, as someone else said earlier in this thread. It must be getting insanely crowded by now. I noticed it was crowded, especially in the departure gates area past security while I was in Winnipeg for a conference in 2004.

Its is beyond its maximum. Yes it was designed for 600,000 passengers.. and has since opened up the basement for international arrivals. Its getting ridiculous.

Watch this video for a better understanding.

That is a good video to get a quick and dirty rundown of the new terminal.

I can't wait for this project's completion.. it is really going to have a significant impact on our city. It will attract more investment, more flights, more visitors and improve the city's image. Winnipeg will have the most attractive airport in Canada... and it will be a source of pride.

I love it !!!

From what I understand the original 1964 building was designed for 600,000 passengers. However, the airport had a major expansion in 1984 and has had a number of other major renovations done since then. The actual capacity of the existing airport is well over 600,000 now, but still less than what the airport can now handle efficiently. In fact they were considering another major expansion, but decided on a new terminal instead.

Could there be a Winnipeg-Manila route on the horizon?

No one is saying that it should be 40 n/s flights a week. Maybe once or twice; enough to fill the demand, mostly business and vacation travel. Lots of airlines do this. And as demand grows, so do the flight options.

It CAN work if implemented properly.

It may be random, but man, there is a demand. It would definitely cut down on connecting flights.

However, I've heard some... uh... stories about Philippine Airlines, and most of them aren't so stellar (I'm Filipino, so I basically heard this from my folks).

I don't know how much times have changed, but overall, it's a start.

I don't know if Winnipeg to Manila is all that random. Winnipeg does have a very large Filipino population, as well as significant immigration from the Philippines...

My thoughts exactly.

Would the same go for any European immigrants, like Polish, German, or even Ukrainian, for a service from their home country to land here in Winnipeg?

You'd need to have a substantial business class component on long-range international flights to make them viable for a major carrier, I'd think. If it's just economy-class tourists then it would be the sort of seasonal and low-price business that charters would cater to.
