Southern Livin'... I Guess It Ain't So Bad

I've been living in Alabama for the past three years. It feels weird to say that because it's hard to accept living that long in a place you never really cared to live. You can almost see that reflected in the photo threads I've posted on here, because barely any of them are from Alabama or the South in general.

I feel like when I left Florida to move to Portland I turned my back on my own region. After moving back to the South to go to school at the University of Alabama I was forced to seek out all of the positives and redeeming qualities of the South and after awhile I discovered that it's not bad. Even though the South is often looked down upon as being backwards and conservative, I would argue that it can hold it's own with any other region in the country.

As I'm about to graduate from Alabama I wanted to showcase the region in a positive light. With Tuscaloosa as my home base for the past few years I've been in a central location to travel to various parts of the South. What I never realized while I was in Portland is how isolated and homogenous the culture was out west. In the South as you head north towards Louisville the accents and architecture change dramatically and the same happens as you head south to the Gulf Coast. Florida is another world. Atlanta exists in it's own universe within the State of Georgia. Beautiful beaches, history everywhere (both good and bad), mountains, swamps, snow, and overbearing heat and humidity. Everything anyone could possibly want can be found in the South and I hope after viewing the pictures I've taken during my time here, you'll agree.

For graduate school I'm either headed to NYC, Miami, or Seattle. If a miracle happens I might end up in London. Regardless of where I end up, I hope to be able to photograph wherever I end up moving as nicely as I've been able to with the South.

What? The West has the nation's highest concentration of two of the three main minority groups--Asian and Latino people, who speak any number of languages, follow any number of customs, and eat any number of cuisines. The West is not culturally homegenous--the exact opposite is true.

I'd like to marry my partner of 14 years. Where in the South can I get this most critical of all "wants" in my life? You're looking for the positive, and that's a great attitude--but don't whitewash things. The South doesn't offer "anything anyone could possibly want" like the East and West Coasts do.

If I may be presumptuous, this Google Map view is fairly close.

Nice.
I was sucked in by that southern charm after living for 2 years in Tallahassee. It's a slow creep.

Great photos! Very atmospheric, and reminiscent of the south for me in many ways.

Arkiteke, I think there were a number of Memphis photos in here.

fflint, we get it, you live in San Francisco. You can be as much of an elitist caricature as you wish. Though, I do agree that the west is as culturally heterogeneous as the south.

The information highlighted in the paragraph below is a copy and paste from Wikipedia. This is information regarding the racial composition of the city of Portland. The metro area is probably even more white (non hispanic) than the city itself. I have heard others complain that Portland (and Seattle also) is not very ethnically diverse. Maybe our friend from Alabama has a valid point at least with regards to Portland and the Pacific NW. On the other hand, if I am not mistaken, Washington state is the only place out west where it is currently legal for gays to marry.

"The census reported the city as 76.1% White (444,254 people), 7.1% Asian (41,448), 6.3% Black or African American (36,778), 1.0% Native American (5,838), 0.5% Pacific Islander (2,919), 4.7% belonging to two or more racial groups (24,437) and 5.0% from other races (28,987).[152] 9.4% were Hispanic or Latino, of any race (54,840). Whites not of Hispanic origin made up 72.2% of the total population.[152]"

thanks for the great pics, glad you ended up having a good time.

i like that you got pics of off the beaten path places (Bessemer) and a fair share of grit.

thanks, beautiful pics! I have a friend who's from Queens--seemingly a typical hardcore New Yorker--and he's lived in Birmingham off and on for several years (now "on") and loves it there.

Great thread cityscapes, thanks for the tour. Some of your South Florida shots are almost dreamy....

On a sidenote as a gay man that is not originally from the South and lives in one of reddest States in the Country, I absolutely love it here (and not just the Atlanta "bubble").

You couldn't blast me out of here.
