Unofficial, but a map locating damaged homes. Made via satellite from yesterday.

^Fascinating map. The destruction is awful to be sure, but on the plus side it looks like the majority of the city made it out unscathed (so far). I wonder what the smoke damage will be in some areas though.

Yep. However not only do we have to worry about smoke damage, we have to look at heat damage.

When the fish plant burned down in Bay de Verde, the smoke blew across the town. It wrote off most of the houses in its path, and it was a snuffed candle compared to Fort Mac.

I was surprised just smoke could do so much damage.

When there's a fire in a large multi-unit complex (particularly reinforced concreted), it's very common for the fire to be contained completely within the unit of ignition. However it's also not uncommon for other units to have to be completely gutted simply from smoke damage. In a woodframe building it sometimes mean stearing the whole thing down.

Looks like the house my parents built in 1975 in Beacon Hill was destroyed.
Edit: They haven't lived their for a long time.

As bad as the damage appears to be, it looks like critical infrastructure was spared, and thankfully the fire didn't jump the highway downtown.

Radio-Canada is reporting the airport is on fire. No other media outlets are reporting this so let's hope they are wrong.

BMO pegged an extremely preliminary worst case scenario (that may not be worse enough) estimate at 9 billion.

I wonder if cloud seeding is on the table as a way to quickly get some much needed rainfall.

Cloud seeding just creates a nucleus for water vapour to condense onto, and the theory is that is will creates more, smaller raindrops (or hailstones) to mitigate the damage caused by heavy rain / hail. Seeding will not solve this problem as there is no moisture in the air to begin with.

In fact, forest fires naturally seed the air for rain. If there is no humidity, there is no rain that is going to fall. But if there is humidity, the flyash will attract water and it will help the water to precipitate.

How are we going pay for this?

The Banks will be paying back people's insurance, that's going to cover a lot of it. It'll hurt the banks I suppose, but I'm sure it can manage.

And the insurance companies (less so banks) have reinsurance to cover them. Munich and Swiss Re should be concerned.

Insurance will pay most of it, so residents of Alberta can expect our rates to go up again...

Between friends and family members, I know about 15 people who live in Fort Mac. Thankfully, it appears that none of them have lost their homes up to this point. I really hope the situation turns around real quick up there.
