PROPOSED

The Battery Hotel

Pending the required inspections and other approvals, MUN intends to purchase the iconic and infamous Battery Hotel on Signal Hill in downtown St. John's. Once and if the purchase is completed, we should be able to find out more information about whether we're looking at a minor re-clad, a significant refurbishing, or new construction for the site.

Building X is either Field Hall or Spencer Hall (they're next to each other and I always get the two confused). These two buildings are graduate student's residents. Field hall also houses the graduate students bar - Bitters.

Building Y is C-CORE (Centre for Cold Oceans Research Engineering).

In terms of renderings and completion dates, sorry but I can't help you out there.

I also heard that MUN will be adding an extra story to the Engineering building. Again, I haven't seen any renderings and/or construction dates.

I think having a MUN thread is a really good idea.. thanks, SHH!

Building X is Queen's College, I believe.

It also may be a good idea to post the proposals for the new science facilities. As seen here: http://www.mun.ca/facman/about/Site_Options.pdf

Thank you, everyone! I think we're close to up-to-date now. I'll have to add that parkade under completed.

Sorry to be picky, but MUN is Memorial University of Newfoundland. There's no "and Labrador"
in the name, so please correct. Thanks.

No problem. I can't change the title, but I can change all the references in the post. If a mod happens to see this, can you please correct the title as indicated by rthomasd?

Done.

I'm torn as to which option I would prefer. I like Option 1 because I think MUN needs to build up and increase density (which it is, with buildings like the new residences).

I like Option 2 because it's a more interesting design... and two towers are better than a block.

bud, option 4 was chosen
which is neither of the ones posted here (kind of a mix though)

I can't wait to see renderings for the buildings that will replace the science building

Yeah, I'm excited. It won't be as cool as the UBC building in that Best of 2012 thread in the Canada forum, but it should be modern and beautiful.

I don't know if there are any drawings/renderings out there, but does anybody remember this - When Axel Misen was the president at MUN, he wanted to build a tower in the centre of the current science building and then have the old building torn down around it. I'm not sure if there was any planning done or if it was just bantered with, but it was an interesting idea.

MUN should use that space to construct 2 buildings, at least one of them being an additional residence.

With the Battery purchase, they would be better off converting it to an office building and returning the Arts building to primarily classroom space after extensive renovations. I like the idea of a residence in the Battery, (think of the impression it would give of St. John's to students coming in) but it's just too far away from the campus to be practical. It's almost the same as if Grenfell were to purchase the lodge at Marble Mountain, it just wouldn't make sense for the university to use it for student purposes.

Yeah, it's too bad, Trevor. If we had proper public transit, it wouldn't be a problem.

Would it make sense for a city our size to spread student residences out strategically in order to create the need for public transit? Then serve that need?

The Battery Hotel will be a residence for grad students, I'm not sure how much of their work, if any, will actually take place at the Battery.
