If only these buildings still existed, and Main Street was a charming stretch of shops and restaurants, etc.

At what point do we just start referring to Morden and Winkler as "the twin cities"???

I remember making graphs projecting the different towns' population growth when I was about 9. I recollect that Thompson was supposed to be bigger than Winnipeg by now. I'm not quite sure how I got it so wrong.

They used to have new population figures for every place with 50 people or more on the back of every new highway map each year, so I used my collection of maps for my data.

The absence of Flin Flon is astonishing.

Agreed, its hard to believe that in 1951 Flin Flon was the third largest city in Manitoba, and today its 11th, but that's part of the life of boom-bust cities.

Its quite incredible to watch the ascent of Steinbach and Winkler over the past couple years.

Anyone know exactly what protection level the bank that the new Palomino/Former Whiskey Dix has? Is it completely protected so Harvard can’t tear it down or drastically alter it?

It's Grade II. The definition below is from the 1977 bylaw which was repealed in 2014, but the new bylaw kept the same definitions. It's difficult for me to believe that Harvard would have bought this property without knowing the heritage designation and that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to tear down.

Grade II; the objectives of which are:
amended 5301/89
(i) to preserve the entire exterior of the building, erection or structureand such of its interior elements as are specified in the listing, and
amended 3284/82, 5301/89
(ii) to ensure that all repairs thereof are appropriate to their special
architectural or historical interest, and amended 3284/82, 5301/89
(iii) to prevent or regulate demolition, removal, alteration or repair of the
remainder of such interior in the manner described in subsection 5(c).

Winnipeg Clinic Opposing Historic Designation

Article in The Sun today in in which "Owners of the Winnipeg Clinic are fighting a proposed historic designation, which they fear will saddle them with extra work and extra costs."

http://www.winnipegsun.com/2017/10/1...2718b00cf25bb1.

Where do you draw the line as what gets designated as historic? The owners are blaming the nomination to that list for causing a "four-month delay and $20,000 budget increase to a recent one-floor renovation of the building." I sympathize for the owners on this and don't see why this should be designated as historic. Built in 1942, ugly and no real historic value. Not a huge loss if this was ever demolished.

That building would be an awesome condo conversion with those big windows on the wing side.

Third. One of Winnipeg's modernist standouts.
