It's basically Calgary's Mardi Gras.

During the day, the midway is packed with families, all the big companies host atleast one party for their staff and guests at one of the big clubs, everyone gets obscenely drunk and then at night, everyone else comes down and joins them in the drunken shinanigans x 10 days

Also this thread is missing one important aspect of the scenery during Stampede. All the sexy LEGS

How so? You associate it with rural Alberta more than urban Alberta? You're right that Calgary has largely moved beyond being a frontier town in the wild west, but cowboy culture is still very much part of their fabric/heritage.

Besides, the world's biggest rodeo is the Calgary Stampede. A cowboy hat is a very iconic symbol of Calgary. That said, it is a little odd seeing white collar oil executives in clothes one associates with rural life.
