Cathedral Church of St. James in Toronto:

Quote:
At 92.9 metres (305 feet), the tower and spire have remained the tallest in Canada and the second tallest in North America after St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York—although the spire of St. James is still shorter than the dome of Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montreal, which is the tallest church in the Western Hemisphere.

interesting how so many threads at this forum excluse from participation anything from outside US or Canada.

I think that if the objective is to discuss only churches in the US or Canada, it should be moved to the North American forum!!

therefore, I will ignore the title of the thread, and will post some from Brazil

Maringá Cathedral (124m)

^ I was going to request South American tallest churches next, in a different thread, Trantor. I, as the starter of the thread, simply wanted to try to collect some data on US and Canadian tallest churches at first, because there is little info for church heights in the US and Canada available aside from the very well known ones.

The thread is entirely relevant to the Buildings & Architecture subform and is in its most proper place. If you wish to start a South American churches thread, you are of course more than welcome to do just that. South America, Mexico, and Central America were "excluded" by me for a specific reason... to make the thread more manageable by focusing on tallest church architecture in the US and Canada FIRST. But thanks for the Brazilian churches. The Catedral da Sé and Santa Cruz do Sul Cathedral are awesome.

pj3000: I may have vented off in this thread, but this problem is quite common in the entire SSP forum international area.

anyway, I dont see a reason to separate one continent per threads. Unlike SSC, there are few people from elsewhere but North America in here, so it would hardly make a mess of the thread if it was about the whole americas or the entire world. Well, at least I think so

Not true. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception spire is 329' and the spire on the top of the Cathedral of St. Paul is 307'. Not to mention the tower of Riverside Church is 392'.

Okay. Yeah, why not... I guess we should just post from the Americas in total. I thought it would get too crazy, but who cares? But please, let's stick to the Western Hemisphere (N and S America). European churches are well-documented in terms of height... the Americas are not, so that's why I wanted to start the thread to see interesting tall church architecture from this Hemisphere. I changed the thread title to reflect this.

Here's a church that is probably amoung the tallest if you count the total rise from the surrounding ground.

Basilica of Holy Hill
Erin, Wisconsin

geraldbrimacombe.com

andrewcusack.com

The pictures don't really do it justice, this church can be seen from 20 miles away in some locations. It is also one of the earliest sites in the interior of North America to be recognized by Europeans having been the site of a Jesuit shrine to Mary as early as 1676. The summit is about 800 feet above Lake Michigan level and 400 feet around the surrounding terrain. Add a 200 foot Church to that and you have one highly visible structure.

PS, Yes Wisconsin does have a mini mountain range...

^
The National Cathedral sits atop the tallest hill in DC. If you include the hill, the top of the steeple is about 650 feet above the surrounding terrain.

I changed the name of the thread to reflect the entire western hemisphere.

Also, I opened another thread to discuss western hemisphere minarets. If you know of any, please share them there.

A glaring omission to that Wikipedia list is one of our most famous landmarks:

Trinity Church - New York, NY

Did I forget to do that? I thought I did after Trantor added some Brazilian tallest churches, but I may be losing my mind.

I think it gets pretty spotty after 300 feet. There are probably a ton of omissions in the 250-300 range.

Only mods can change thread titles. The system only let you change the title of the first post in the thread.

Right, it seems like we could find a lot in only the US even in that range that haven't been listed.

Indeed. Thanks for bringing it to my attention as the wikipedia page (and your list) were missing St. Paul's Cathedral in Buffalo (275ft). I have since update it.

I hate this one... and I believe most cariocas hate this thing too. Actually, I dont know anybody who thinks this thing is pretty, but then, probably there are a few people who like it.

I included it on the first page of this thread though. I like those sandstone cathedrals.
