Great portrayal of Vancouver, so familiar yet slightly different.
Be careful though, many people dwell too much on the dregs.

Great thread flar! I really like how you exposed the DTES as an actual neighborhood with diverse inhabitants from all walks of life as opposed to just a sideshow.

I was not expecting that kind of architecture in Vancouver at all. What a great surprise!

Very nice. I'm loving those old low and midrises.

Amazing thread, hopefully you get some more time there soon, I'd love to see the pictures you come up with after a proper tour.

I really want to go back, I didn't have time to take in much. Even though it was only for a few hours, it was the most fun I've had exploring a city in a long, long time.

Both sets of pictures were really well done! When do you think you will have a chance to get back to Vancouver? You need to explore some of the suburbs also like New Westminster. Thanks for the pictures look forward to when you get back to Vancouver.

thanks

Great pictures as usual!!

I've been to Vancouver once and I have to admit that when I strolled into East Hastings it shocked me so much that after a couple of pictures, I put my camera away. It didn't feel safe there by myself and my camera was new. It is the only Canadian city that I've felt that way (only in Downtown eastside of course, the rest of the city is beautiful).

That being said, what do you use for a lense in an area like that?

Wow! Missed this thread, some great photos of the DTES and it's great bones, and some Chinatown photos to boot. Vancouver has some good grit, and not only on the DTES, it's not all shiny towers like many people expect....

I'm lazy now, I only use my 16-85 these days.

Vancouver has a great urban fabric, I could spend a lot of time there

Thanks for the photos. I worked in treatment centers and needle dispensaries on the DTES for years before moving to SF in 2010. I cannot believe how much has changed on Hastings street.

And, just an FYI, just as in many cultures in countries across the world, people consider it extremely disrespectful to have their photos taken in that part of town.... So you either have a choice to respect culture or not (when legality isn't an issue).

There is no cause to complain when you are in a public place in Canada and someone takes your picture.

I knew that going in, and the people there made it abundantly clear. However, I felt the area needed to be documented. It's a public place and my photos are not exploitative. I could have sensationalized it if I wanted to, but I didn't, out of respect. That level of respect was not reciprocated to be perfectly honest, but I don't hold it against them because I would have fit in quite well there in my younger days.

Nice photo tour, especially considering just 5 hours to work with.

Excellent photo tour. We don't often see pics of the east side much, thanks for posting.

No offense to you in particular, but I think that line of thinking is bullshit. Just because that part of town is in bad shape and many of the people are destitute doesn't mean it's disrespectful to take pictures of them.

Why is it disrespectful for them but it's not disrespectful for others? It's okay to take pics of rich people eating lunch on a patio or somebody's children walking to school, but not anyone who hangs out on Est Hasting?. In all cases the people are in public, and when in public you might just get your picture taken.
