And people walk on all fours in Chicago and grunt and throw their feces all along Wacker Drive. That's what excessive shorts wearing created.

That's not just Chicago, it's all over the Midwest. I really wish we'd stop acting like cargo-shorted, feral Midwesterners is just a Chicago thing.

Hell, I'd argue it's worse in Columbus. God help you if you wander into that town wearing anything but scarlet and grey.

This thread is about comparing things to San Francisco. So here is a typical rendering of a San Francisco building under construction (Park Tower). See the shorts-wearing hipsters? Wearing shorts is so common in SF they put them in the renderings. So you have to wear them if your want your town to be like SF (and scatter some used needles around the curb and park half a dozen rented motorized scooters on the sidewalk too).

Tourists are very common in San Francisco.

Wearing shorts in New York during the summer is something only tourists do. I can't tell you the last time I worse shorts outside of my apartment. Even at the gym, long gym spandex with a pair of gym shorts over them.

In São Paulo, same thing. Shorts are not on the list of day to day wear.

How things have changed!

Quite scary how unkept the subway was back then. Nowadays the service is absolutely horrible, but at least there isn't graffiti everywhere and the cars are usually clean, aside from the odd vomit or piss, usually later at night.

Thank you. Same thing in Mexico City and Bogota.

It would be very odd for a male adult to be walking around in shorts, assuming they aren't working out. This is probably true in 90% of the cities on the planet.

So what does, exactly, the “not wearing shorts in New York” thing exactly do for you? What’s the end game of this?

I wear shorts almost all summer in Chicago. I've not once heard "no shorts" as a thing about a city.

There's no endgame. Just speaking the truth.

The better question is why are a bunch of random Americans/Canadians making wild, easily disproven claims about something as silly as shorts?

Oh c'mon now...it is not that bad. But scarlet and gray is a nice combo. Scarlet Tee shirt with gray cargo pants... or scarlet Tee shirt with gray sweat pants.

Nobody has mentioned sweat pants, or sweat pant shorts. They are the male equivalent of women wearing yogapants/jeggings.

So are sweats ok in NYC or London as long as they are long?

In NYC you see a lot of women in Lululemon. In London or Europe it’s only acceptable going to/from the gym. Otherwise it’s a very distinctive marker of low social class (particular Adidas or similar track pants).
