An Eastern German Firm Makes It Big With The Burj Dubai
Hagen Tober | 01.02.2007 | 16:30

A firm based near Bitterfeld has won a contract to provide glass for the tallest skyscraper in the world. The Burj Dubai is planned to be covered in 250 thousand square metres of glass.

Guardian Floatglas GmbH has won the contract with a high-tech reflective glass ideal for hot climates. The business was set up in 1996 by the US company Guardian Industries. Today, some 400 specialists are employed here. Every day, glass panels leave the works in containers bound for Hamburg, from where they will be shipped to the United Arab Emirates.

Hey Slugbelch - great work man. I would have posted the other pics from flickr also, but when the pic does not have the all sizes button I have been going to the other properties link and getting the tiny version there. How do you get the full size ones ? Also Flickr is the only one that is searchable that I have found - is there any others ? If you don't want to give up any secrets, no worries man 'cus only rarely do I beat you to the new pics anyway. Keep up the great work dude

Most of the time, if your a visitor, you can get the "all sizes" button just like the registered users. There are pix that, if you register, you can get the "all sizes" button at times when visitors don't

No secrets here my friend. The only thing I have is just several older pics I haven't posted yet. One day I'll clean out my folder and put 'em up.

Flickr is the only one I can find that photogs post BD stuff on a regular basis. Webshots is not very good, but once or twice a gem is posted. I also check out Dubai blogs every once in a while. What's fun is running into things by accident through search engines (Sky T's latest World pics for example). I stumbled upon a render today that was only available small, but now another big one for us (1.6MB):

http://www.dorma.com/en/newspress/ar...-329-5048.html
(click on the "download" link)

Grab it before it's gone!

By the way, how did you get those two shots you just posted? I can't seem to find them there. Nice find and nice pix!

sweet render thx. Yes and please do go through your stuff
I will register at flickr toot sweet. I registered at imageshack a while ago hoping for a search feature - no luck Whenever I see a pic on Flickr I go to that person's more pics link and peruse all of thier pics - almost always I find more Burj pics. Those 2 were in Pixmixer's more photo's link - Emaar art symposium 2007 dubai - about third or fourth page. Also 2 from march 2004 that are very close to the Burj site. Not quite, but has to be close.

I have been fascinated by skyscrapers since I was a child. I even have a framed 3000 piece puzzle I did up years ago hanging on my wall- a caracuture of NYC including the WTC towers. Now with this and other websites my interest grows more and more for all tall structures - but this Burj Dubai is a love affair that I can't get enough of. I will probably never get to Dubai to see it but checking these sites daily is almost like being there. A big to you and all who contribute.

The sign board today reads 108 storeys. So on what basis do they update it? It jumped from 102 to 108 over the weekend I think… The updating seems completely random.

Man I still can’t see most of the pics posted here… I have reasons to believe that the company I work for has its own proxy server, which is in turn proxied by Etisalat & on & on & on…

^^ Companies with their own central servers often uses proxies, to stop overloading of their networks and of course stopinmg their staff for waisting productive time on net browsing and things not related to productivity.

Oh Crap… This shot will probably cost me 200Dhs.

I should back-charge it to Emaar… But they already pissed thousands of ‘The Greens’ residents by forcing them to buy their leased apartments last week, otherwise it will be put into the open market.

Thanks wadiman. After almost 2 weeks stuck in neutral, it looks like (in your pic) that the core is finally on the rise again.
