Galveston- It's like a small New Orleans with an ugly but useful beach.

San Antonio- It's like a whole other country.

Dallas- Lots of pretty skyscrapers to look at. It would rank higher if it hadn't lost so much to its burbs.

Fort Worth- It's too sleepy for me.

El Paso- Too brown. It's cool to look at for a long weekend but I'd be miserable long term.

Corpus- I love the Bay and it gave us Whataburger but there's no there there.
Like what you said about Gtown , it's so true. Oh yeah and HOUSTON is the best.

While I listed my personal rankings of my favorite Texas cities a few posts up, i believe that one of the most interesting things about Texas is the uniqueness of the cities in the state. Houston, Dallas, SA, Austin, & FW all have distinct assets that make them great. I for one, have always found the Metroplex particularly interesting, because of the fact that you have two big cities (Dallas & Fort Worth) that are so close, yet so different in their character and vibe.

your list may vary...

I gotta go with Fort Worth. It has some real western character to it no other Texas city has. And I like the comment above. Dallas and Fort Worth are one yet they are very different as well.

Favorite Texas city?

None of the above.

But seriously, I happen to like parts of Houston... Fort Worth is pretty cool, and so's the Riverwalk area of San Antonio. I don't really have a favorite, though...

I'd have to say my favorite is Austin. It's the most memorable both man made and geographic. Always excited to just be there an explore.

After that, I would have to say Houston. I never thought, before moving here, that I would say that considering Houston's image, but it really is a melting pot of so much worldly detail. It's got its little disfunction, particularly a cohesive walkability factor, but that's something that a planner like myself can promote and change. It's my favorite city to drive on the freeways (in non-rush hour of course).

San Antonio and Dallas are on the same level for me. I love both their downtowns. Dallas has a neat organic feel to it with a splash of modern infrastructure and San Antonio is just a preservationists heaven. It took me a while to warm up to downtown San Antonio, but the time I went there during the work week made me appreciate it so much more, locking into a comfortable liking of the place despite the tourists...but that's a necessary component to SA's likeability, I suppose. I have to wander around the rest of the city a bit more, because from what I've seen, I've been pretty creeped out.

I also liked Corpus Christi. I wasn't sure what to expect when I went there the one and only time, but I connected with it pretty well. I like the corridor from downtown to the beaches. And the stroll along the downtown waterfront is very enjoyable and decently connected to the loads of potential the city streets offer.

I haven't been to Ft. Worth yet and that's my next priority.

Overall, I've been pretty impressed with Texas cities, but they do take some time getting use to...especially Houston. It gets on my nerves many times still!

Brownsville. In it's coldest month of January, the average low temperature is still above 50 degrees. Even then it still warms up to nearly 70 for the high temperature. Plus you have the beach and Mexico just minutes away.

Houston??? I guess this is a skyscraper forum....

1. Ft Worth - Great downtown, great neighborhoods, doesnt try to hard.
2. Austin - Energetic atmosphere, good economy - tries a little hard to be hippie town Texas
3. Dallas - For all its faults, its got a lot to offer
4. San Antonio - Great Mexican/Texan culture, hill country, riverwalk
5. Houston - I actually like alot, but the summers are just opressively humid
6. Corpus - only because others had it listed......ehh, its okay

I think all Texan cities have something to offer.

Austin, my hometown, has a great liberal atmosphere and a surplus of things that matter to me: government, education, music.

San Antonio, my current residence, is also a great place. Of all the major Texas cities it has the most history. Some other things I love about San Antonio are the efficiently designed freeways (the traffic here is comparatively non-existent) and the vibrant mix of Mexican and German culture.

Dallas and Houston have similar appeals for me: both have an abundance of conservative suburbs, but both also have very vibrant inner city neighborhoods. Montrose, Oak Lawn, etc.

No offense to anyone who likes Fort Worth, but I really do consider it a large suburb of Dallas. It used to function as a separate entity, and in many ways still does, but today's Fort Worth is really just an offshoot of Dallas.

El Paso is where everything goes to die. I used to live in Ruidoso, NM (a wonderful ski resort town, you all should visit) and the closest major town was El Paso. Whenever we needed to shop at a big box store (sans Wal-Mart - Ruidoso has one) or needed to fly somewhere we would drive to El Paso. The only memories I have of it are negative. No trees anywhere, disgusting buildings, homeless people, trash strewn everywhere, etc. It is like a worse version of Albuquerque (another place I'll never go back to).
