Downtown all set for pouring of MainPlace foundation
Houston Business Journal - by Jennifer Dawson
More than 100 workers are about to spend the better part of a day pouring the concrete foundation of MainPlace, a 46-story office building being developed in downtown Houston by the Hines CalPERS Green Development Fund.
A parade of trucks will roll up to 811 Main to pour the foundation, or mat, starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5.
Houston-based Hines says the major production will involve 125 trucks pouring 1,200 truck loads worth of concrete into the building’s 38,000-square-foot footprint.
A total of 12,000 yards of concrete will be poured to create a foundation that’s nine feet thick with a whopping 3 million pounds of rebar. Two levels of the building will be located below street level, so the mat will be poured beneath that.
It will take 2,000 man hours to complete the job, which will involve 18 hours of continuous pouring.
During the process, the trucks will drive a total of 23,000 miles to deliver the concrete, the equivalent of 620 trips around the 610 Loop.
MainPlace is expected to be finished in 2011.
