I would've liked the old Montagu to persevere (like the Stowers Tower on the other corner of the block) but overall, this block was the lone true eyesore in the core of downtown. It was very out of place.

At least the Stowers Tower will survive and will probably benefit from the new neighbor.

Yeah, didn't someone actually buy the Montagu and attempt to restore it a few years ago? I recall reading a thread along those lines on HAIF a while back.

Eh, I'm still going to be down there 7AM on Sunday morning to attempt to get a pic or two.

The last owners of the building actually put money into an effort to legitimately renovate the hotel, including upgrading the carpeting, painting the walls to the lobby, replacing the antiquated air conditioning unit, and so forth. This was happening as late as early last year.

Obviously, the deal that was eventualy offered by the new owners of the property ended up being a much better bargain than renovating the hotel.

regardless, main place looks pretty damn sweet.
I hate losing old buildings too. This building isn't exactly a masterpiece though. It's rather bland as far as old buildings go. Still, I do hate losing older buildings. But if it really does help the street life, then it can't be all bad.

had it retained its cornice it would've been far from bland.

main place is sweet though!

We cant save everything. There is still plenty of great old structures. Now granted we dont want a free for all of tearing down any old building cause we can. Still the building did more harm then good. So with that, now the city can move in a more positive, brighter direction. Which will be good for all...

I like this one. It's a good addition to Houston's skyline.

There are still a lot of historic towers left in DT Houston:

That's a pretty nice HDR shot, there.

HDR= High Dynamic Range, you take several shots at different exposures and blend them using software. That way the sky is not white and you can see all the way down into the darker canyons of the office towers.

Though Trae added the credit, I would like to say that the guy Trae took the photo form, Jax, is a hobby photog who regularly posts really nice pictures of Houston, Montral, San Fran, Atlanta, among others on HAIF and FLickr. He is my favorite modern photographer.

(just thought I would add that)

here is his photo collection:

But to stay on topic, I am really looking forward to Main Place rising on that side of Downtown.

MainPlace was mentioned briefly in this week's Houston Business Journal regarding an article on Downtown office developments. According to Hines' Senior VP, John Mooz, foundation work is set to begin in March.

Any ideas as to how long it would take from excavation to the first floor rising to street level?
