This type of thing is common on Broadway, where you have a hotel on the street with a theater in the back.
the city basically said demoing the theatre is not gonna happen

Good to hear. I think it would be worth it to throw some extra tax credits/PILOT etc. in exchange for reopening it as a venue. Especially with Harrah's in limbo, I think the demand will be there in 3-4 years when construction would be complete. They could also use it as a meeting/banquet facility which would help the hotel component.

This is MUCH improved over the previous plan. As long as they keep some retail or something on canal (which it looks like is in the plans), rather than an empty facade im fine with them using the stage for valet. Also would probably help traffic a lot and give more activity to the side streets, which is needed. I also think the idea of a bar/food on the 2nd floor level is a neat idea.

Harrah's Casino extension dies as Louisiana Legislature adjourns

Before it adjourned for the regular session, the Louisiana Legislature could not reach a compromise Friday (May 18) on an extension of Harrah's New Orleans casino gambling license. The bill died a conference committee, dealing a major blow to plans for a new $350 million hotel.

Supporters of the deal had cited the extension as part of a unique economic development opportunity. Critics questioned whether negotiating a deal with six years left on Harrah's current permit and without putting the license up for a bid was the best deal for the city and state.

Those disagreements plunged House Bill 553, authored by House Speaker Taylor Barras, R-New Iberia, into intensive negotiations Friday as he and Senate President John Alario, R-Westwego, tried to resolve significant differences in payments Harrah would agree to make as part of the deal. But those negotiations apparently failed.

Agreed with everyone on the new State Palace hotel plans. Great to see the theater preserved.

I know we all want to see things get built but i have to say the best negotiations
Can happen later. I would like to see a competitive bidding process open to everyone. We could see some really interesting things . Also harrahs was planning to sell the lease to a private hedge fund right after lease extension and then just manage the property. The state has more leverage going forward and should get the most it can for it as well as the best development plans

" Even though the theater portion of the structure would be preserved, committee members were in agreement that placing the tower on top of the current entrance and demolishing the exterior façade was not an acceptable approach.

A previous iteration of the project would have saved the façade but demolished the theater where developers would build a tower with 108 hotel rooms and a parking structure. Committee members shot down that idea at a meeting in April.

“The reason this site is so challenging is that they’re trying to make a hotel out of a theater,” said Michael Duplantier, vice president of the Louisiana Landmarks Society. “It just doesn’t work.” "

MSY continues to grow:

http://www.wwl.com/articles/armstron...ssenger-record

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport set a record for the number of passengers flying in and out of the airport in a single month.

In March 2018, 1.2 million passengers traveled through MSY, according to airport officials. It beats the old single-month record, set in May 2017, by 100,000 travelers.

“The mayor hinted there could be a number of street-scape projects in downtown New Orleans completed in time for the big game.”
