I always thought that the area around River Rock could be mini casino strip with a few more similarly sized competing casinos to create a true destination area.

Having said that I thought BCLC pretty much already met their limit on the number of casinos/slots/tables in this province they would license.

Unless the downtown casino moves there and expands I just dont see how this is possible right now unless BCLC is willing to give out more licenses. Not to mention that any new casino would I think want to be in its own area instead of next to a competing casino.

Plus I would be surprised if the casino licenses that are handed out dont come with some guarantee that a competing casino wont go and move next door.

Anyways interesting to see that someone is thinking of another casino there.

It is on the western edge of Maillardville, in fact, maybe west of the edge. So I think it's fine.

I wish it was more plain, ie: a simple aluminum box or something. The fake cornices and doodads are offensive.

Saw an add for Salient's T&H in the New Westminster Newsleader this weekend, as well as some banners hanging off the Trapp block. This one looks set for take off.

the maillardville building is on the nw corner of lougheed and blue mountain - always been an awkward site - doesn't look like it will be that easy to access via car

That's a good site for the night market (close to Canada Line) - although I'm sure the casino won't want night market traffic using their parkade (although some may drop by to gamble too).

It is a good location, and the proposal includes 1500 free parking spaces with attendants, which addressed the casino's concerns.

I like the idea of letting the free market decide which market survives. The old location (with the newer operator) is a really awful location, and the only good reason to keep holding a market there is because people are used to it. I hope the new location by the Canada Line works out.

That's good to hear.
It's also more central to the other restaurants in Richmond.

the night market operated in that location at least one year maybe two before it moved to the other location - it was so much better there

The complex itself looks to be finished from what i've seen, but no shops have moved in. Do companies usually lease out the spaces before construction begins, or do they build these kind of retail spaces first and hope that businesses buy in?

In this case, it's related to the condo complex, so they probably would have built it even without preleasing.

According to the Richmond Review the Sea Island outlet mall is planning to have a movie theatre:

It seems like a horrible place for a movie theater and unless they plan on concentrating on some niche I doubt that it would be very competitive with the new theater going in at marine drive.

It's interesting to see how proximity to a SkyTrain station is fast becoming a factor for new-build movie threatre complexes. First was Plaza 88 in New West and then the one in Marine Gateway in Vancouver. With Translink presumably not planning to add transit service to SeaIsland to service the outlet mall, I wonder how successful a movie theatre complex would be there? Obviously the car-oriented Silver City in Richmond does good business, so the thing could probably do just fine; but I wonder what the cost would be of competing with the movie theatre complex in Marine Gateway which also has transit access.

No worse than building a mall there in the first place, though they better put in good sound insulation as the site is literally run under the flight path.

To SFUVancouver's point, yes it would have been much better to include theatres as part of a Landowne Mall redevelopment, given that it has it own C-Line station.

Something doesn't add up. If we are buildings all these new movie theaters they must be making money, yet movie producers to who these profits ultimately flow to claim hardship due to downloading their crap?

How many new movie theaters would this make? New Westminster Azure, Marine Drive, Tssawassen(?sure they will have ones in that big of a mall), this Outlet Mall, .............sure there is more in the suburbs I dont know of.

Marine Drive would essentially be a "replacement" of the screens from closures at Richmond Centre and Oakridge, no?

Same here, the location is perfect at the confluence of the 2 Canada line arms, directly under the noisy YVR flight path, in one of the more drier areas of our metro (and milder in the winter).

My ultimate dream for this area would be to have 2 to 3 major casinos, several hotel towers, a large boardwalk along the river frontage in the area, a small open pay per ride theme park (akin to casinos in vegas) with 1 or 2 roller coasters, and yes, a ferris wheel (given how they are very popular in asian cities and the fact that Richmond is nearly Asian itself) and an open outdoor venue (with covered sections) that would be used for major concerts and a permanent location for the outdoor night market. And of course the standard onslaught of restaurants.

This would be a true destination entertainment district for locals and tourists alike, and given its close proximity to YVR and good catchment for those with long overlays.

I know many here hate such forms of entertainment, but this location is far enough away from downtown for its "cheese" factor to destroy anything.

This would
