Or maybe the consultant partner paid for it? Or maybe the radiologist has been working for 35 years and has saved enough? Don't judge people without any information, man.

No, I'm pretty sure it's safe to assume the radiologist making $800,000/year is one one who paid.

I'm not sure why everyone is getting huffy about a mild comment about the (well-known) fact that radiologists are overpaid.

I guess it depends on how you would classify overpaid. They serve a function that saves lives, so that makes it important. Because of its importance, it is hard to train to become one (since the standards are so high). Because of this the cost of training is high. Because of the high cost to train, there is a scarce supply of those able to train. Because of this, the demand outstrips supply, which means they are paid more to entice them to train and fill the job.

If you cut that pay from $800,000 to $100,000 for example, you might find no one will do the job if the cost to become one remains the same, just the same as no one would be a garbage collector if they were paid minimum wage and had to go to school for 8 years.

Please note I did not say that doctors are overpaid, I said that radiologists are overpaid. Go talk to some other doctors about how much radiologists make and you'll get a much angrier response then you're getting from me.

Can you provide a link to support your assumption on wage?

I know a radiologist in Sask... $198K is about how much he pays for each of his cars. I remember an insurance guy I deal with told me a few years ago one of his clients here in Wpg is a radiologist who was making about $800K a few years out of residency. Docs make good money overall but radiologists are near the top of the heap, and they rarely even have to deal with the icky blood and guts stuff to boot.

Make your kids become radiologists!

^No kidding.

So a radiologist is the one who reads MRI's and such? They would then go tell the other doctor whats going on? Seems like a pretty sweet gig, liability there of course. But making that kind of cash to look for stuff on pictures, wow.

^ Generally yes. The technology has improved greatly which means they can churn through diagnostic images far more efficiently than before. And when you charge per patient, that means more jingle in your pocket. Let's not overlook the fact that high speed internet everywhere means you can now literally sit in the confines of your Falcon Lake cottage and review files on your laptop. It's nice work if you can get it.
