Has anyone considered maybe they are JUST putting the glass on, and maybe some lights on timers, to make it look occupied?

Who says anyone will even use this place?

Why would the glass go on now, no external construction lifts to work on the interior (no idea how much work needs to be done inside...other than a lot)?

Uninventive perhaps, but is that really a surprise? It appears to be the most interesting cladding across the city, from the likes of that photo.

I agree. As far as where the money is coming from I don't think they are concerned with being inventive, but more so with catching up with the rest of the world.

IMO the cladding and the glas don't really fit to the interesting (or ugly) shape of the tower. what do you think?

like i said before it looked more interesting as a shell. even with the ackward shape, with the glass on its starting to look mundane.

the thing is that its being built in North Korea! its a communist country with ugly and badly made appartments and buisness buildings that are always the same, and arent unique so it damages how well Ryonguyong hotel looks. This buildings stands out and is pretty! but looks bad in a horrible city like Pyongyang.

This is, by far, one of the most interesting projects on this forum. I find North Korea fascinating, if not a little frightening. Will be an interesting place to visit after the fall of their dictatorship.

No. But an Egyptian Telecommunications company (Firma auf Deutsch?) is financing the re-construction of the building. Therefore, it is a private investment. It is possible they could stick an antenna on top of it, especially if they start contracts for giving North Koreans cell phones.

In fact, that part of the Wikipedia article says that most stuff going on is about the exterior (windows...). There is no information about anything going on inside of the building. The Orascom Group is involved because they are interested in building up a cell phone infrastructure in North Korea. That's why the antennae.

Der Hauptgedanke ist, dass das Gebäude 2012 zum 100. Geburtstag von Kim Il Sung schick und modern aussieht. Man kann sich ja denken, wie lukrativ das für die Firma sein muss, wenn sie gleich das ganze Gebäude (äußerlich) modernisieren. Ob im Gebäude was gemacht wird, weiß keiner so recht.

hmmm...so, to confirm, what we know is that it is being used for a satellite antenna, and the facade work is just a facade...nothing more? Makes sense considering reports of the concrete...
