I was hoping it'd be a McDonald's!

Boston Pizza makes sense. Though they're only leasing the space, Eastport Properties would probably want a well known popular chain located in the building than a local startup.

As well I've always enjoyed Boston Pizza.

I understand the need for a few chain restaurants downtown, but I wish it was something better than Boston Pizza. I've never really loved anything from there, it's all just kind of that same generic, frozen blah. At the same time, I'd be hard pressed to be able to name a chained restaurant I'd prefer more there.

(Unless we can convince Your Father's Moustache to open up shop in St. John's )

Awesome! 351 was definitely pretty quick rising! I guess precast concrete and steel framework is much easier to assemble than the other concrete structures we see being built. Great to see it's officially topped off! Won't be long now before Fortis is topped off!

Although, I have to say, I'm very disappointed with the lack of proposals this year. Not only have there been zero significant propopsals, but as of now, there has been virtually no action on any of the other many approved projects in the DT area. I was expecting to see lots of construction by now.. but still nothing. And to think we said 2013 was going to be an extremely exciting year.. Very disappointed..

Signal's pictures are the only thing worth discussing these past 5 months

It is probably the Heritage committee not allowing a McDonald's to set up shop in the downtown, even though they allow multiple Subway's and Tim Hortons.......

1) It is cheap, nothing DT is cheap and it would take A LOT of business away from places selling overpriced sandwiches. (Good luck getting lunch under 10 bucks that will fill you). I bet most businesses would lobby against it completely.

2) Would hurt the "heritage" of the area. Yes b'y some of the new McDonalds are nicer inside than a lot of fine dining places.

I live downtown and I can't even begin to imagine the amount of times that I have been hungry past 10pm and amazed at the lack of choices that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Do you have any proof that it's the 'Heritage Committee' not allowing a McDonald's downtown? I don't think they have that kind of power, haha.

Let's stick to facts, rather than speculations.

Speculating is fun

But on a serious note, why do you think that there isn't one? It would be profitable.

I have no idea - bad luck? lack of space? A McDonald's would require a minimum amount of square footage which limits options. With that said, i think we should have one. I absolutely think it's ridiculous that you can't get anything to eat at a fair price past 10pm. That's unacceptable for a downtown! ha

My guess would be a lack of suitable space. McDonalds are typically big and maybe there isn't really anything available downtown at the moment that would meet the needs. Velmas location could be suitable if renovated.

My other guess would be franchise costs. McDonalds typically cost around a million for the franchise rights alone. Kathy Bennett seems to be the owner of the bulk of the locations in the Metro area, there's a possibility she's happy with what she has and isn't looking for expansion. Of course, there's always the opportunity for someone else to step in.

Hmmm.... how did a full discussion of McD's setting up shop DT make it to 351 Water thread? Probably best we move it over to the restaurant thread....

Well the Heritage Committee decides what kind of signs are allowed on buildings so they do have good sway.

There's a big difference between influencing signage to cherry-picking private enterprises. So I disagree.

Fine by me, but if McDonald's, or other fast food places, aren't going to be able to use there regular signage and advertisements they probably don't want the hassle of dealing with council.

I did notice that most if not all of the street-level glass for the retail part of the building is up
