Groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday for new dormitory at Drexel University, along 34th Street, designed by Erdy McHenry. Great piece of architecture....Floor plates are shaped like "footballs with the ends cut-off", and rotate as they go up the building..
Great looking building! It has planned housing for only 282 people.... that doesn't seem like much. Is that common for college dorms? I would expect many more people to be housed in a 17 story building.
Its actually quite common to only house 272 students. They are not regular
dorm rooms but more like suites/apartment style with common areas, kitchens and bathrooms.

Thoroughbred, I agree with Don....you need to build a lead post with pics and info.
Also, this shouldn't be in the Construction forum*yet*, it is still a proposal until actual construction starts (ie: concrete is poured). Right now it is still in "Pre-Construction".
Project is now"officially" under construction as notification was awaiting the groundbreaking ceremony...caissons have started and should be completed in two weeks...concrete superstructure should begin rising in July, and will be a very visible part of the University City skyline by year end.

Everything happening in west philly over the past 10 years has just be amazing. We are lucky that these school have decideed to really invest in the area.
Whether they had to or not, it is still great for the city.
Admins, students, officials break ground at new dorm

Drexel students, faculty and staff came together May 21 with the Powelton Village community to break ground on the new 34th Street residence hall.
Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Tobey Oxholm said that seven years ago there was no relationship between Drexel and the Powelton Village Community, and now they have collaborated to become an "active, dynamic community."
"Drexel's relationship with the Powelton Village Community has improved over the years, and when the plans for the new residence hall were presented to them, they applauded its design," Jim Katsaounis, executive director of communications for the Division of Student Life and Administrative Services said.
West Philadelphia Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell stressed the importance of "partnership and everybody giving a little" to make this project a success.
"West Philadelphia is the best place in the country to be," Blackwell said.
The $42 million project will culminate in August 2009 and will be ready for the 2009-2010 school year, according to Katsaounis.
James Tucker, senior vice president for SLAS, said the new dormitory will be the "focal point of Drexel's campus as a residential community."
All students were invited to a cookout immediately following the ceremony.
"[The cookout] was to recognize the student involvement in the development and design of the building," Katsaounis said.
Tucker also told the guests of the event that this is the first of three major construction changes to occur on Drexel's campus.
In the fall, the Daskalakis Athletic Center will undergo renovations, moving to the Armory. Following in the winter months will be the construction of a new bioscience building.
seems like a lot of the West Philly stuff gets ignored. Yeh, this project is moving along smoothly and is already taking its football shape. Someone should really make a start page for it and take some pics.
