Yes, the building itself is being relocated and business will resume in a few months after.

I would not be surprised to see Lustre Pearl move right down the street to the lot where Container Bar had been planned.

I was really hoping that the Container Bar would come to fruition. That concept would really fit well with the area.

According to Mike's post it will have 8 floors according to the plans they've filed with the city.

The address is 89-97 Rainey Street.

This project is still being pursued, according to this:

Dunlap is quite obviously planning to move the Lustre Pearle and do the Container Bar.

No. This is not the lot, I believe, where Container Bar had been planned.

91 Rainey is on the east side of Rainey street. The container bar lot is adjacent to the western side of the street. Also, the container bar lot would more than likely have a Davis street address.

I've heard rumors that Bridget owns or leases the land next to Weather Up on E Cesar Chavez so that may be Luster Pearl's new home.

I think an 8 story building is a waste. Leave what is there now. If you wanna build it. Redesign it with a small footprint and simply add floors. Half the footprint and we could have a slender 16 floor building rather than a squatty 8 floor.

I had posted the above one along with a photo of the demo. See below. It's interesting to see that stretch along East Ave is now totally cleared. I really hope the project does not get an Alley vacation, which would force a little redesign. It's a huge site that can support multiple buildings.

There was an article about a week ago in the Austin Business Journal. The gist of it was that originally, there had been four objections. Three of the four objections have been resolved and the alley vacation is likely to clear City Council.

Rainey Street building that'll replace Lustre Pearl not so controversial anymore

I saw that article too, and my hopes for anything besides this suburban development were crushed. The Waller Center developers were one of the four groups against the alley vacation. But they're on board now.

This isn't a suburban development at all. It's very urban, just not a skyscraper.

Yeah, you don't find 8-story apartment buildings in the suburbs.

IMO, this building will affect perceptions of Austin quite a bit. Old, single-family houses will be no more. In their place will be this behemoth, right next to 35. It will be one of the first (high-rise?) buildings people see coming north on 35. Unfortunately, it will also block some views of the skyline. Let's hope it turns out well.

Since it is 8 floors tall, I am guessing that the entire building will be steel framed. Does anybody know whether this is the case here? The other apartment buildings built along IH35 have all been stick-built above a concrete garage structure.

It'll probably be concrete.

I guess I meant concrete. I always think of concrete and rebar as being steel framed, but I guess that is a dated concept. At any rate, I am always kind of nervous about the large stick built apartment projects because they seen vulnerable to a major fire in ways that would not impact a concrete structure.

Does anyone know if this will include ground or retail? I can't tell from the elevations. I sure hope so otherwise it'll create a long, boring streetscape on Rainey.
