I F&(*&^* FORGOT TO BRING MY CAMERA TO NEW YORK (photo thread)

So I bought some disposable film cameras...

Anyway, these photos were taken in Jan. of '08 or '09, but I just scanned them today. It was during one of those wonderful mid winter mild spells, and are heavy on the northern reaches of Manhattan like Inwood and Hamilton Heights. There's also a scattering of photos from along Broadway down to downtown and a little Brooklyn (I walked the length of Manhattan only to end up with a bloody toe and unable to explore much of Brooklyn beyond the inside of a bar resting my foot). The order of these photos is all over the place...

Damn! This was probably one of the coolest threads iv seen on this site. nice touch with the dj shadow too. Might as well stick with the disposable if your gonna produce threads like this one.

This thread was awesomely unique...I don't recall there being a disposable camera thread before. While disposable cameras aren't really for serious work usually, I think they can sometimes offer some neat and intriguing results, like many of the photos in this thread. Great job !

This felt like an 80's movie...but present day.

That's a compliment.

I would probably want a plane ticket refund if I forgot my camera to NY but you have some interesting results in here.

Love the quality of real film photos. The stair streets are awesome. Looks like you got lots of exercise on that trip!

You know, you really made disposable film work here. Props. There is an intriguing, old school NY quality present in these photos, no doubt helped by your selection of Washington Heights/Inwood as subjects. I love the dense, uninterrupted blocks of 6/7-story Art-Deco buildings that you find in the 180s/190s up there.

I like it, feels very 1980s. I would die if I forgot my camera going to NYC.

from top to bottom, you went bottom to top. scans of prints, talk about flashbacks. that last pic looking out to the jersey palisades is dope.

Not that the 70s and 80s didn't have their share of grit, but I think some of the associated grunge from those eras is amplified by the tools that were used to capture it. I've wondered what the NY in the 70s would have looked like if it could have been captured in today's over-crisp, plastic-esque, hi-res digital cameras.

The disposable film does a decent job with dynamic range, maybe better than the average P&S digital. Thanks for posting these. Great set.

^ agreed. love that gritty dirtiness, but crisp is good too.

fun thread -- you definately had quite a walk!

and just for a little more fun -- on the left is your shot and on the right is the view exactly 180degrees around from it that i took a couple weeks ago:

Nice photos! It's incredible how a camera can completely change the look of photos. When using a disposable camera it immediately gives the impression that the pictures are a bit old. On my trip in 1998 I only had a disposable cam and on my return trip earlier this year I used a digicam. Anyway, it might have been good you forgot your cam.

Thanks everyone. I didn't think that a bunch of scanned crappy photos stuck together in a shopping bag for 3 years would get this kind of response! Maybe I need to see what else I have.
