Woah, nice! I almost thought I'd never see that project get off the ground. Nice to see some more movement around there.

More renovations on Dexter Avenue have begun. The corner building on the right will be an Alloz Grill. Not sure about the one next to it.

For real. It's been pretty slow going but I've that this summer will be the opening. At least the first floor retail part is supposed to be. The apartments across the street are nearly finished.

The Yards at Western Rail

New 40-acre music/festival/event venue coming to north downtown at Western Railyard. It will be called the Yards at Western Rail.

"The company behind the elaborate renovation of the Kress building and other Dexter Avenue projects bought the lot full of towering brick-and-steel structures and originally planned to use it as a construction site."

They have began renovating some of the buildings and one will house restrooms and control facilities. A smaller brick building to be used as a ticket booth.

"A towering structure behind the main shed will be enclosed so it can host indoor events ranging from smaller concerts to weddings."

"It’s a place he thinks can bring foot traffic from downtown hotels and, eventually, cause beach-goers to change their plans and get off the interstate to attend events."

Downtown dog park

"The city is planning to open a dog park at the site by early July. That will mean a fenced-in area at the corner of Coosa and Bibb streets next to the City Hall parking deck, with dog water fountains and separate areas for big and small pups. Down the road, they’re planning to add agility equipment and more."

"City officials said the park is meant to help pet owners among the rapidly growing downtown loft communities. There are about 700 apartment units downtown now and more on the way."

"City officials said the park is meant to help pet owners among the rapidly growing downtown loft communities. There are about 700 apartment units downtown now and more on the way."

The Hannah Daye Ridling dog park opened four years ago in east Montgomery’s Blount Park. Strange praised the success of that park and said the city and the Rotarians wanted to give downtown residents a similar place to go.

“This is about making life comfortable for the individuals who don’t want to live out in the suburbs,” he said.

Great idea for the dog park. Having these kinds of amenities is key to bringing them downtown and keeping them there. Birmingham would be smart to figure something like this out closer to all of the new apartments in downtown.

The former skatepark has finally undergone prepping for the new Staybridge Suites at the corner of Bibb and Lee Streets.

This will be a 118 room hotel.

The story from last year.

Brick Pavers

Sorry, this isn't development news but I didn't know where else to turn. Alabama Power has been putting in a new vault on the corner of McDonough and Monroe. In doing so, they have unearthed some brick pavers that have Jefferson Paver stamped in them. Does anyone know about how old these could possibly be? I was able to get one because I think its pretty neat and part of the history of downtown. I tried looking up info on the internet but nothing came up. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Maxwell AFB is planning an innovation center to be built outside the gates of the air base. It will be a gathering place for researchers from the Air University.

It will connect with the MGMix for high speed internet.

“(The innovation center) is going to become a honeypot for every company that wants to do business with the military, every person that wants to innovate because they can come to a place where they can act faster than any other place in the country,” Kwast said. “When we break open the gates of that base and bring them out into the city, with the kind of connectivity that this (Montgomery Internet Exchange) provides, you just hang on to your hat and watch how quickly we can invent new ways of living the American dream.”

He describes a Maxwell Boulevard lined with new buildings, housing major aerospace companies, tech giants and more. All of that could happen — and soon — “if we do this right,” an Air Force general said.

An official announcement will come in early 2018.

Frios Gourmet Pops opened in downtown behind Mama Goldburgs at 36 Dexter Avenue.

http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/...ery/969756001/

Troy and his wife, Jenny Stubbs, have opened Frios stores in Wetumpka, Tallassee and Prattville. Troy Stubbs said they’ve focused on downtowns to help reverse a trend of declining city centers.

“Our commitment is to better downtowns,” he said. “That’s our goal. We don’t put Frios Gourmet Pops in the highly trafficked shopping districts.”

The 187th at Dannelly Field has landed the F35A.

The jets should begin arriving sometime in 2023 as the Air Force retires its F-16 fighter jets.

The economic impact of the program will be sizable due to the more than $3 billion investment. According to the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce, the F-35 will help preserve over 1,400 existing jobs and an economic impact that's topped more than $80 million annually over the last five years. That's expected to climb to more than $100 million after the F-35 arrives. In addition to saving those jobs, more than 1,000 additional highly-skilled jobs are expected to be added.

I was super excited to read this news this afternoon!

I wanted to post it in the MGM thread, but I thought it better that a local post the news.

This will provide a most needed shot in the arm for Montgomery's economy, and will ensure the future of Alabama's air defense installations for decades to come.

This is easily one of the most important announcements for Alabama this year, yet it won't receive much press beyond this week.

Water Works building to become hotel

The soon to be former water works building will become a boutique hotel.

"The antebellum Murphy House, the downtown location for the Montgomery Water Works and Sanitary Sewer Board for the past 50 years, will soon become a five-star boutique hotel."

The hotel company will be a Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel and will feature 2 bars, one will be rooftop, with a "destination" restaurant.

They plan to keep the Murphy House name.
