With a completely matte non-reflecting effect like in the above example, any skyscraper would look its worst. A high-reflecting facade as the current building (see below) but in black would be awesome.

I have to disagree with some here : what I like the most about this building is its color !!

For some reason, I just can't get myself to like this thing. It reminds me of JPMorgan Chase in Houston which I actually like.

Yes, the building is spectacular, and a major reason for that is the splendid colour!

One thing about this tower is it's sleekness and just sheer size makes it look a lot taller than it actually is. From the base it can look almost like a supertall..

One of the cool things about the 'V' at the top. This building has noticeable setbacks without having them compromise the height. So even with a unique design from setbacks, the sheer height of the tower is unaffected.

Really awesome tower. Not as great as the shining white First Canadian Place or the truly awesome Mies Van Der Rohe TD complex, but it was impressive when I visited Toronto. I love that city's mid-late century towers.

I don't know how anyone could say that with a straight face. The TD complex and First Canadian Place are completely featureless utilitarian boxes. Scotia is no Chrysler Building but at least it has a little architectural flavor.

you see, the thing about the TD centre is that it takes that "boxiness" and makes it look incredible. walking around it is great, it just has this extremely elegant quality to it. Its very similar to the Seagram building, actually.

FCP is bleh, though it has improved a lot since its recladding.

You clearly have no clue about minimalist architecture. The use of clean forms and lines to produce an effect. If you don't understand that you've lost out on half of all architecture. "Detailed" buildings are hard to fit together, and have very little room for error. One mistake is enough to make the thing kitsch a la Dubai.

Imagine how hideous those buildings would look if detailed statues and shapes were tacked on the facade. Childish, backwards and gross.

minimalist, as in minimal design, minimal expense and minimal results.

That color is so boring and vile. It works on Mars but not on a building...

agree with this
This reminds me of architecture in Houston or suburban.
Ugliest building in Toronto imo because of color and the pixilated effect the building gets from the staircase chevron and corners

I can assure you that minimal expense was absolutely not undertaken at the TD centre. That place is filled with marble. Similar to FCP, it was coated in a granite cladding (Expensive, but ugly and it was literally falling off before the recladding to glass).

RBC centre, while not completely minimalist, quite literally has gold in its glass.

These buildings weren't built on the cheap and modernism absolutely =/= cheap.

As for Scotiaplaza, its post-modernist. So yea, its going to look like a postmodernist tower. And its a damn good looking post-modern building as well.

^Actually FCP was clad in cararra marble, which didn't hold up well at all to Toronto's wildly variable and sometimes harsh climate. At the time it was installed, they had no idea how badly it would deteriorate. The TD towers were designed by Mies Van Der Rohe, who used top quality materials and finishes for his projects, letting the richness and beauty of those materials (stone, wood, and metal), as well as attention to detail and proportion speak for themselves. All of the Skyscrapers around King and Bay got similar treatment- a lot of attention was paid to detail and quality material.
