Sephora to open Grande Prairie store in August

By Joshua Santos, Grande Prairie Daily Herald-Tribune
Thursday, May 24, 2018

Global makeup giant Sephora will open a store at the Prairie Mall Shopping Centre.

Sephora offers nearly three hundred beauty brands such as NARS Cosmetics, Make Up For Ever, Too Faced Cosmetics, Anastasia Beverley Hills, Urban Decay, and Benefit Cosmetics among many other products.

“It’s tremendous for the mall. Sephora is one of the premiere retailers in retail. I think they’ll do extremely well in this market,” said Lionel Frey, general manager of Prairie Mall Shopping Centre.

“Many customers really identified Sephora as one they would like to see in our centre. We’re expecting that they’ll do very, very well and of course that’ll increase traffic to our centre so it’s a good thing for other merchants as well.”

Besides makeup, Sephora also has skincare, body, fragrance, nail colour and haircare products.

Belicia Chung, marketing coordinator for National Public Relations said the Grande Prairie store is scheduled to open in August in an email statement.

Sephora currently operates approximately 2,300 stores in 33 countries worldwide. They opened their first American store in New York’s Soho neighbourhood in 1998 and its first Canadian store in Toronto in 2004, according to their website.

They have a store in Kingsway Mall, South Edmonton Commons, Southgate Centre and West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton.

They're building a new store in the Regent Mall in Fredericton, NB. The second New Brunswick store after Moncton (so far they skipped Saint John as far as I know). It'll be the 4th store in the Maritimes after 2 in Halifax and Moncton.

Zero-waste retail game plan gaining traction in Vancouver

Second bring-your-own-container store set to open as Vancouver bans single-use plastics

By Omri Wallach | May 25, 2018

Nada buyer and supplier relationship manager Alison Carr at the new Vancouver store: “no plastic or paper bags, only reusable items” | Chung Chow

Vancouver’s zero-waste movement could be more economically viable than merely trendy as Nada, a grocery store where customers bring their own containers, is set to open on the corner of Fraser Street and Broadway in June.

The zero-waste store will be the second such venture in the city, following the Soap Dispensary/Kitchen Staples expansion into groceries in September of last year. They join other stores across Canada, including West Coast Refill in Victoria, Nu Grocery in Ottawa and Épicerie Loco in Montreal.

The success of these businesses could demonstrate that low- to no-waste shops can survive and thrive in a rapidly evolving and increasingly environmentally aware retail marketplace.

The City of Vancouver recently passed motions banning single-use plastics such as straws and foam containers by June 1, 2019, with aims to reduce plastic bags and coffee cups as part of a drive to be the world’s greenest city by 2040.

Stores like Nada are the embodiment of the zero-waste movement and are eager to help consumers and businesses see alternatives to single-use plastics. The store, which operated as a monthly pop-up in Kitsilano for two years, won’t have any disposable containers for walk-in customers looking to get produce or other groceries.

“No plastic or paper bags, only reusable items,” said Alison Carr, Nada’s buyer and supplier relationship manager, in a conversation with Business in Vancouver.

She said the store will encourage customers to bring containers and work with organizations to provide reusable bags.

La Maison Simons will be building a new state of the art, 575,000 square feet distribution center in Quebec City with the help of institutional partners.

Quote:
La Maison Simons is bringing in outside investors for the first time in its storied history, striking deals with two public sector partners that will help fund a new distribution centre key to its strategy as it confronts an unforgiving retail environment.

The Quebec City-based clothing store chain, believed to be the oldest privately-owned family business in the country at 178 years, is opening its share capital to the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and Investissement Québec after weeks of talks. Simons announced details of the agreements in Quebec City Tuesday morning.

Simons opens its doors to outside investors for bigger push into e-commerce

The Caisse will make a $27-million investment in Simons while Investissement Québec will put in $17-million, Simons said in a background document. The Quebec government will also lend the company $81-million on undisclosed terms, most of it for the purchase of equipment for the new distribution facility. Labour fund Fonds de solidarité FTQ is contributing $20-million through a real estate partnership with Simons for land purchase and construction.

Picking the Caisse and the government as partners will allow Simons to push ahead with its strategy without the risk that they will meddle heavily in the business or press for a takeover. Chief Executive Peter Simons had said he was looking for patient investors that share his company’s values. The closely-held company is owned by the Simons family.

Located in Quebec City, the new distribution centre will stretch over about 575,000 square feet. The heavily-automated facility will give Simons the power to process roughly 15,000 orders per hour and ship more than 40 million units per year, doubling its current handling capacity, the company says. It is expected to open in 2020 at a total project cost of $215-million.

Time Out Market is coming to Montréal

A first in Canada: the famous food and cultural market is set to open in late 2019 in the Centre Eaton de Montréal

LONDON and MONTRÉAL, May 30, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - A new hotspot for foodies and culture lovers is coming to Montréal: Time Out Market is set to open in late 2019 in the Centre Eaton de Montréal, on Sainte-Catherine Street in the heart of downtown Montréal.

Time Out Market Montréal will bring the best of the city together under one roof: its best restaurants, bars and cultural experiences, based on editorial curation. Visitors will get to taste food from the city's top chefs and best restaurateurs, sip cocktails from leading mixologists, and experience culture with Montréal's rising talents.

Time Out Market is part of Time Out Group, the global media and entertainment business. The Group has signed its first management agreement with global real estate leader Ivanhoé Cambridge to open Time Out Market in Montréal, the first in Canada.

Occupying 36,000 ft2 (more than 3,300 m2), Time Out Market Montréal will include a curated mix of 16 food offerings, two bars, a demo kitchen, a cooking academy, a retail shop and a cultural stage—all representing the very best Montréal has to offer.

With its location at the heart of the city on Sainte-Catherine Street, Time Out Market will be the centrepiece of a C$200M redevelopment project at Centre Eaton de Montréal, a landmark downtown destination with an annual footfall in excess of 30 million visitors. Centre Eaton de Montréal is owned and managed by Ivanhoé Cambridge, which is currently investing more than C$1B in revitalizing this part of downtown.

Time Out Market Montréal is following the wildly successful culinary phenomenon Time Out Market Lisbon, which opened in 2014 to offer the very best of Lisbon with 26 restaurants, six kiosks, eight bars and cafés, five shops as well as a cooking academy. With 3.6 million visitors in 2017, Time Out Market Lisbon is the country's most popular attraction thanks to the high-quality fine dining and cultural experiences it makes available and accessible to all. In March 2018, it received an international award recognizing it as one of the most visionary concepts in the European food service sector.

Building on the success of the Company's flagship market in Lisbon, Time Out Market is set to open in New York and Miami at the end of 2018, to be followed by Boston, Chicago and Montréal in 2019.

Uniqlo Announces 4 Canadian Stores as it Ramps Up National Expansion

June 06, 2018

By Craig Patterson

Popular Japanese fashion retailer UNIQLO has announced that it will open four stores in Canada in the fall of 2018, as it ramps up its Canadian expansion that could see as many as 100 stores open over the next several years. Remarkably, the fall 2018 announced expansion alone will almost double UNIQLO’s Canadian store count in a relatively short period of time. As competition continues to grow in the fast-fashion category, there could be fallout as similar retailers fight for market share.

Of the four newly announced UNIQLO stores, three of them will be in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and one will be in Vancouver’s eastern suburbs. The three GTA stores will be at: Vaughan Mills, Square One in Mississauga, and at CF Markville in Markham. The Vancouver area store will be at Coquitlam Centre. When all stores are open, the GTA will have five UNIQLO stores and the Lower Mainland will have four.

Hudson’s Bay to shutter 10 Lord & Taylor stores, including Manhattan flagship

MARINA STRAUSS

After years of resisting significant store closures, Hudson’s Bay Co. is now preparing to shut up to 10 of its U.S. Lord & Taylor outlets, including its iconic flagship on Fifth Avenue in New York, while selling its Gilt online division, amid disappointing first-quarter results.

The moves come about four months after Toronto-based HBC named as its new chief executive officer Helena Foulkes, a seasoned retail leader who previously helped strengthen the drugstore division of U.S.-based CVS Health Corp.

Now, Ms. Foulkes is starting to put her stamp on HBC, having appointed some new executives – including former CVS managers – and sending a strong signal that she is ready to make big, bold moves at HBC to revive its struggling business.

“We still have a lot of work to do but we’re committed to making the right business decisions to turn our results around,” Ms. Foulkes said on Tuesday after the department-store retailer released first-quarter results that missed analysts’ expectations.

“Every option is on the table.”

HBC has grappled for years with a fast-changing retail market and the rise of e-commerce powerhouses that are reshaping the landscape and forcing incumbents to either reinvent their businesses or falter.

HBC’s first-quarter results reflect its difficulties as sales across most of its divisions dipped while costs rose, although bright spots were its luxury Saks Fifth Avenue chain and its e-commerce. The company’s stock fell about 1.5 per cent to $10.46 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Hudson’s Bay Opens First New Store in Canada in 18 Years [Photos/Analysis]
August 27, 2018

Quote:
The 129,000 square foot Hudson’s Bay store is located at the Carrefour Angrignon Shopping Centre in LaSalle, located about six kilometres south of Montreal’s downtown core. The new store features the typical departments found at Hudson’s Bay including fashions for women, men and children as well as footwear, leather goods and accessories, major home fashions and Hudson’s Bay’s new toy department. The store also features an expanded assortment of beauty and cosmetics. Its design reflects Hudson's Bay's updated interior aesthetic which features bright lighting and attractive interiors -- some existing stores have seen such renovations, though many suburban stores leave something to be desired.

Quote:
The next newly-built Hudson’s Bay store to open in Canada will actually be a replacement location in the same mall. Vancouver’s Oakridge Centre will see a newly built 140,000 square foot Hudson’s Bay store open as part of a mall redevelopment in 2022, replacing an existing store which was originally branded as Woodward’s.

U.S.-based owner of Town Shoes to close all 38 stores in Canada by January

About 400 workers employed by Town Shoes are expected to be affected by the closures

The Canadian Press ·

Canadian shoe lovers will soon have one less spot to snatch up footwear and experts say its a symptom of changing consumer behaviour.

Ohio-based shoe brand DSW Inc. said it will shutter its Town Shoes Ltd. brand and close all 38 of its stores, which operated solely in Canada, by the end of the company's financial year in January.

DSW Inc. spokesperson Margaret Standing said the decision was made after the company undertook a 90-day review to look at Town Shoes' historical performance, competitive positioning and future requirements.

Difficult decision
"The decision to exit the Town banner was a difficult decision to make, given its heritage," she told The Canadian Press in an email.

"Unfortunately, as the competitive landscape for mid-luxury, mall-based footwear has dramatically changed, comparable sales have deteriorated consistently and generated significant operating losses."

Tamara Szames, a fashion industry analyst with research company NPD Group, said "off-price" and luxury apparel retailers are both exceeding growth expectations, but businesses in the middle, like Town Shoes, are being challenged.

"When we look at the retailers that have closed down over the last 24 months, it is really those in the middle," she said.

"With e-commerce really driving growth, we have started to see more brick-and-mortar stores close to align with consumer demand."

Town Shoes minority stake bought by U.S. chain DSW
Only 15 per cent of shoe sales in Canada are done via online channels, trailing the U.S., where 25 per cent of footwear purchases are done through e-commerce, Szames said.

She's expecting to see a "dynamic shift" in the near future, as Canada's online footwear sales grow at twice the speed of the U.S.

She's also predicting the closure of retailers like Town Shoes will continue to add to the changing face of malls, which have already been grappling with how to fill spaces left vacant by the recent Canadian closures of Sears and Target.

The closures have forced many malls to turn to condo developments, health-care offices, restaurants and gyms to fill vacant properties.

The Town Shoes closure will only bring more room to fill because its stores, which average 232 square metres (2,500 square feet), have long been a staple at Canadian malls.
