[SA] In 2006, San Antonio had 26 million tourist visitors

I'm posting this because I know there's always the debate about how many tourists San Antonio gets.

Quote:
San Antonio's hospitality industry grew a healthy 20 percent to $10.5 billion from 2004 to '06, making it one of the fastest-growing economic sectors in the city, according to a study released Wednesday.

The economic impact study also shows that visitors to San Antonio increased by about 24 percent to 26 million in that two-year period, and the hospitality work force rose 6 percent to 100,294. That means about one in eight employees in San Antonio works in the hospitality sector.

The study, which is now done every two years, last reported that the industry generated $8.7 billion in economic impact for the city in 2004 after $7.7 billion in 2002 and $7.4 billion in 2000.
Two other industries in SA:

Manufacturing and Health care.

Quote:
Manufacturing had a $14.4 billion economic impact, which was a 19 percent increase from 2004. In 2006, health care showed a $15.3 billion impact, an increase of 11 percent from 2004.
The articles didn't have the economic impact for Finance or the Military which are both some of the biggest economic generators in San Antonio.

so the title of this post is false...

the city had 26 million tourist visitors in 2 years, not in 2006 alone.

still a nice number and one that seems to be growing. 24% growth every two years would mean that the number would double every 8 years - nice!!

That's over a million visitors per month! So that's why The Alamo and River Walk are always so crowded.

I think you're reading it wrong/interpreting it incorrectly. It says in that two year period the number grew to 26 million. Since the study is done every two years they calculate the data for the two years prior. I seriously doubt the Alamo City only got 13 million in 05 and in 06.

that seems pretty clear. i think it is for 26 million for two years, otherwise it would have said "26 million in each year of that two year period"...

I read it as 24 percent growth over two years and 26 million visitors in 06.

The article is pretty clear:

to 26 million in that two-year period

13 million a year.

If it is a poorly written piece you can always email them and request a clarification and post it here.

SA certainly does get a lot of tourism. I'm curious how it compares with other cities in TX and with other tourism hot spots around the US. Do they know how many are from TX, vs outside the state?

Maybe the writing is not as clear as it could be, but I am sure he means 26 million in 06. One, there have been articles putting San Antonio visitors at 20 million a year in the past, 13 million in 06 would mean tourism has contracted not increased. Two, the two year logic would suggest the economic impact and hospitality worker numbers be spread over two years: 5.25 billion economic impact and 50,147 workers in 2006.

The article does indicate that the visitor number is for two years. But I think the 26 million number is the annual number for 2006. Here's a link to another report that says SA has more than 20 million annual visitors.

The study is done every two years, and visitors grew by 24% to 26 million yearly visitors. Makes sense too me.

I would now put San Antonio easily in the top 10 for number of total visitors per year. Not quite Las Vegas or Orlando, but certainly at the top.

I found this link, hope it works for you, my comp at work wouldn't open it.

Dude I'm sure they do it by car rentals, hotel rooms and stuff like that. The number would probably be much higher if they could calculate the people from Texas that drove here for the day or stayed at a relatives place.

SA is probably 9 or 10. Behind Las Vegas, Orlando, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, etc.

I have always wondered why SA doesn't have a CityPass. They have the attractions to support one.

I never knew 1 in every 7 workers in the San Antonio area was employed in the health/bioscience field. I knew it was high, but not that high.
