Honestly, I think simply gaining on the seat count could be considered a "win", or at least, enough of a win for Scheer to win. If the NDP fall flat and lose ~20 seats to the Liberals, it's possible for the Conservatives to in turn gain 20-30 seats from the Liberals (a not-too-shabby improvement from 99 seats to 120-130 seats), yet Trudeau would still have another majority. In such a scenario, I would think Scheer could be considered a success.
