Reason why I say we should bid for 2024 is that very often cities have to try several times before getting it. So put a bid in and if you dont win you can work on the issues that they say were negatives. However, Rio won on its first bid. I think the IOC is eager to give other cities and countries a chance. New Orleans would be a good candidate I think. Especially if they decide to award Tokyo 2020 because of the tsunami earthquake.

Anyone know what the holdup is on the VA hospital? They had a head start but now LSU is 3 stories up and VA isn't even out of the ground.

Duncan Plaza?

Most of the parking lots in the Warehouse District are former factories and warehouses, so the soil probably isn't suitable for growing things without expensive remediation.

In all seriousness, I'm guessing it'll be near Tulane Hospital and Handsome Willy's. Just a feeling.

Just wanted to tell everyone here to stay safe. It looks like Isaac is headed right for ya. Better to leave now than wait until the last minute. Things could get messy soon.

To leave us with huge venues which we can't use? To get the private sector investing money only for a month of income. The downfall of the Olympics is ugly for the city it's held in. With our politics and corruption I'd really hate to see it cripple us for sometime after the games are over.

Hurricanes are a fact of life here and this one does not appear to be very strong. I'm expecting another Gustav with some roof damage and downed trees, but not any major flooding, chaos, or looting.

Two lakefront attractions versus one may give folks (including our visitors) a reason to go out there and spend some time and further experience a unique part of New Orleans which is sadly underutilized.

Regarding a lake front resort hotel I have no doubt this is a far better option than for instance condominiums which only bring the enjoyment of the beautiful lake to the few who have these condos.

This city needs this type of hotel property offering. We are actually missing out on small group conferences and meetings because we have no such property. And this is the only site it likely might work. And frankly many a locals, including myself, would find a weekend stay on the lake a nice option for a local day or two get away. As it stand today locals or visitors alike have no accommodation options on the water front in a city surrounded by water….unusual to say the least.

That vacant west end parking lot with a 2-3 story parking deck with mid-rise hotel and its pool on top extended over the lake combined with fishing piers, docks and perhaps a party/tour boat option should be seriously consider before this West End opportunity is lost.
Not to rain on the parade, but this seems unlikely. Construction costs would be almost prohibitively expensive for a hotel built on top of a parking deck outside the flood control walls. And what are the potential comparable properties which a bank would look to before loaning money to support this project? Off the top of my head, I can't think of any similar projects in other cities our sizes that would be (1) new construction resort-style hotels; (2) but located 10 miles from the major tourist attractions in the city; (3) and not include destination-level golf courses. I tried to think of other properties in Miami (where I now live) and I could think of the Biltmore in Coral Gables (but that's renovated old construction and with golf) and maybe the Ritz Carlton in Coconut Grove (but that's located right across from the incongrously located City Hall and relies more on business travelers in the area than a West End resort could). In Texas, there's a couple Hill Country resorts (I think a Westin and a JW Marriott) that are outside San Antonio and Austin, but one is on Horseshoe Bay which has better recreation options and is considered scenically prettier than Lake Pontchartrain, and the other has championship level golf next to it.

Look, I love the lake: I have a condo in Bucktown overlooking the lake because I love it so much. But it looks murky to out-of-towners and it doesn't offer world-class recreation opportunities. We're still a long way away from the West End ever being considered a realistic tourist option. A casino boat perhaps could change that (a la L'Auberge in Baton Rouge), but I think even that is doubtful to attract many out of towners and would be vehemently opposed by people in Lakeview. A Katrina museum could change that, but were that to seriously start to take shape, there would be strong pressure to put it either next to one of the other museums (NOMA, D-Day, etc.) or in the Lower Ninth.

Why do you keep lecturing everybody and referring to New Orleans as we, when you don't live here? You're a fly in the ointment.

And yes, "annie", I will keep bird-dogging you on both this forum and the other one you frequent (and copy posts from here to).

New Orleans would follow London's model. More than half of the necessary venues would be temporary (Tennis, Beach Volleyball, Rowing, Canoing, Shooting etc.)

The Superdome is fantastic. I love it as much as the next New Orleanian. But it's 37 years old. I realize it's basically new inside, but it would require another complete renovation on the order of several hundred million dollars for it to be opening ceremonies quality. Could the Dome host track and field? We'd need a warm-up track nearby. It could probably host soccer.

The Arena, which is 13 years old, could be Olympic caliber for basketball.

Perhaps Zephyr field, which is 15 years old, could be retro-fitted for some sport (baseball is not an Olympic sport).

I'm not sure UNO or Tulane has a single facility today that could be used for the Olympics without major construction (Tulane's football stadium will likely be the exception). There is no pool even close to sufficient, and the closest diving pool is at LSU.

We lack hills, whitewater, a tennis facility, etc. Our airport is barely sufficient for the Super Bowl, even after renovations.

Our weather is anything but ideal during the summer with respect to outdoor events.

What would the Olympics really get us? Does anyone think more of Athens for holding the Olympics?

For a very small fraction of what the Olympics could cost us, we could promote annual summer events like the Red Dress Run, White Linen Night and Running of the Bulls.

I love New Orleans, and I'd love to see new infrastructure, but I don't love New Orleans as an Olympic city.

It's all just casual discussion, but even if we could get the PanAm games, it would be awesome.

New Orleans should host the PanAm Games. This could show the IOC that we are capable of hosting a global event.
