Ah, you're definitely right. I mixed up which side of the street the odd one was for a second. That's right where they had a big "mural" of a Yoko Ono quote recently.

Clear eyes, full lagoons, can’t lose! Over the course of the past two weeks, our team has worked to slowly release over one million gallons of water back into the lagoon system at NOMA's Besthoff Sculpture Garden expansion site. This is a huge milestone for the project and our team. Ahead of the Garden’s mid-May grand opening, we will be finishing work on all pedestrian paths, planting trees and vegetation, completing exterior paneling and interior work on the sculpture pavilion, and placing remaining sculptures. Getting close! #palmisanoprojects #sculpturegarden

Kind of bummed to see 353 Carondelet lose its Mid-Century Modern sheathing. Obviously the original would have aged better, but I think it was a cool statement about how hopeful people were in 50s/60s New Orleans and how that played out in the architecture of the time.

Either way, good to see it being returned to use.

It is interesting to contemplate... the sanlin building is sort of the same thing. However, im unsure of how the building is being restored. Do we know they are removing the 60s cladding?

That's what the PRCNO website seemed to indicate:

yes your are right that article makes it abundantly clear .

The Union Savings & Loan Association occupied the building until 2018. The building currently sits vacant while developers RAMM Real Estate, managed by Richard and Mary Martin Roth, plan a restoration to return the structure to its 1850s appearance and reconfigure the building for retail and office space.

also this explains why they are choosing the 1850s look and not 1950s:

The panel system on the building’s mid-century slipcover was designed to be a rain screen, but exploratory demolitions by Trapolin-Peer Architects and Ryan Gootee General Contractors have shown that the panels have had the opposite effect. The application explains that water “gets trapped behind the panels and sits at the bases, causing corrosion of the panels and clips” that hold the system in place, leading to water and termite damage inside the building. “This rusting is inevitable unless the design, connections, and materials are altered,” the application says. To restore the current modernist facade, though, the materials and design would need to be altered to fix these problems and meet current wind codes – resulting in a design that would likely not keep with the current 1958 appearance.

I am very torn about this restoration. In most cases, later modifications to historic buildings were piecemeal and/or kitsch and restoring the buildings to their original appearance is the best course of action. This time though, I have to disagree.

The Union Savings & Loan Building is a premier example of both mid century architecture and adaptive reuse.

Behind that facade, exists an historic style that is prevalent in the city, but there is only one Union Savings and Loan facade. It's worth preserving for that reason alone, among a host of others.

given the reasons above for the time period they are going with i think its understandable the choice.. not to mention the idea of a whole block of like buildings... still i do have a soft spot for that mid century look too.. the library on canal in mid city is def a favorite of mine
