Bus crashed into salvation army thrift store after its parking brake apparently failed.

The sally-ann's christmas continues to get worse.

My vote goes in for leaving the bus in there. It's great public art.

Historic building survives bus crash

By Michael McQuillan - New Westminster News Leader

Published: December 10, 2008 10:11 AM
Updated: December 10, 2008 2:08 PM

1 Comment Despite the fact a transit bus thundered through the front entrance of the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Columbia Street Tuesday night, there are no plans to hold a "door-crasher" sale any time soon.

"But that's not a bad idea," said Brian Venables with the Salvation Army.

An empty transit bus parked on Alexander Street rolled free around 10:30 p.m. and crashed through one of the store's large glass windows.

The bus damaged a number of electrical poles and signs before hitting the historic building, located in the 700-block of Columbia Street. But the bus "miraculously" missed two large trees in front of the Salvation Army as well as the building's brick archways.

"We are truly blessed," said Venables. "Perhaps there was some divine intervention that no one was injured."

Three quarters of the bus ended up inside the building. It ran over about 30-feet of merchandise before stopping.

Despite the damage the store opened on time at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

"There's a pretty dedicated group of staff here. Some got here around 11:30 p.m. to help clean up the mess," said Venables.

Structural engineers attended the scene Wednesday morning but some new paint, repaired walls and windows were all that was needed, said Venables.

According to the New Westminster Police, the bus driver parked his vehicle on Alexander and set his parking brake. It then broke free and rolled down the hill, across Columbia Street and into the building.

Police estimated the building damage at $100,000 but Venables said it will be far less.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store is the former B.C. Electric Building that was built in 1911. The building was a station for the Interurban tram line which at one time operated a regional commuter and freight transportation system extending from Vancouver to Chilliwack.

So I see our public transit vehicles are coming to life and waging war on the Salvation Army. I think I'll start taking cabs.

I'm not sure if they approve of homosexuals if that is what you are asking, but they won't turn them away if they are need of help. They do a lot of good for the community regardless of some of their views they don't discriminate against anyone that requires assistance.

I'm pretty sure that Coast Mountain is going to need to discipline the drive on this, after the Kootney Loop incident a few years back all bus drivers have been obligated to use blocks on the wheels while parked. Should be interesting to see the rest of the details on this.

In the Kootney Loop incident a bus driver went for his break and the bus rolled over the side of the loop into a convenience store just west of the loop, no one died but there was lots of damage. After that it's been a requirement to use the brake plus blocks on all buses when parked.

That is a gorgeous picture of the interurban depot.
doesn't have that cut through it anymore, although I'm sure if it still did, this bus could have sailed right through without causing any damage! ;-)
