"My friend Alex" is the best I can do right now. And that old news report I once heard.

I don't think Canada is going to change much, if at all. We don't have the fear-mongering media that the U.S. has.

What does the dollar have to do with defining a new era?

The value of the dollar can have huge repercussions on the Canadian economy, which in turn affects society, so in a sense you could use these changes to claim a new era is emerging.

Era is a bit vague... Eras can define almost anything. Every new party in power in Canada could be considered a new era.
This topic is a bit vague as well unfortunately.

When I was a teenager the dollar was under $0.70 US. That really wasn't that long ago. Was that a totally different era than when then dollar was over $0.90? If so, eras obviously aren't long enough for it to matter much when they start and end.

Don't ask people not to debate a topic. Just stop making debatable assertions. Problem solved.

A quick Google search yields a Vice article, "Is Canada Run by a Gay Mafia?" and some blogger claiming she'd been pulled from appearing on The Current on CBC Radio for saying she'd out Baird on-air before the interview.

Then there are a bunch of sources about Baird's support for gay rights internationally (which wouldn't implicate him personally as gay at all).

I'm not denying it but he doesn't appear to be out (assuming he's gay, which I'm not).
Being gay these days is a non-event. People don't hold news conferences announcing it and a failure to do so doesn't make one 'in the closet'. I haven't seen him myself, but people in Toronto's gay village assume he's gay as he frequents gay establishments here. I just assumed he was... maybe he's not.

Anyone who has met him would know. It's pretty obvious when the cameras are off.
