Traffic Signal/Signs in MP

I too was disappointed in the detail on the signal and traffic signs in MP. They were correct for the period but things were just not right.

The ACME signal was red but, as mentioned, no STOP arm extended!
The diamond STOP sign was wrong, no detail, no nothing. Sad.

I would have been happy to provide photos or actual period signs for use or reproduction if they had only contacted me. Maybe next time, www.caltrafficsigns.com

Seriously...I must severely lack talent in tracking down old photos. Grandma danced at the Ebell too, and I've walked by it plenty of times but never saw any old photos. Thanks Ethereal!

To be honest, I didn't know there was an active Women's Club of Hollywood.
The small town I grew up in had both a women's club and a junior women's club (for the younger set).
Neither one of clubs still exist, so I thought perhaps they were a thing of the past.

I guess the Ebell of Los Angeles would be considered a women's club.

This beautiful building was built at the corner of Wilshire and Lucerne in 1927.

The new facilities also included a 1,700 seat auditorium at the rear of the property facing 8th Street.

Corey Miller

They still have these GREAT old neon signs that look like they're out of a 1940s film noir.

What first piqued my interest was this 1909 postcard I found on ebay.....

....as well as this photograph I found on ebay.

Is that even the same building under all those vines?
I guess all that rampant foliage was a result of the meager plants you see in the color postcard.
It looks like an image from the 'Life After People' tv program.

Below is a link to a great article about the 'Ebell of Los Angeles'.

Sorry for the duplicates below....I thought I needed them for comparison's sake.

I seem to have a bit of a mystery here.

After my post on the Ebell Club I thought I would view the club on Google Street View.

This is the Ebell Club fronting on Wilshire. Now compare it with the color postcard and photo above.

Even though the color postcard has a theater in the right place, the main building looks entirely different.
I know that there were numerous Ebell Clubs across the country (and even in the Los Angeles area) so it's possible this is a different location.

I just solved my own mystery.

The building in question was the Ebell Club when it was located on Figueroa.

usc digital archive

The first Ebell Club was located on Broadway (this photo is from 1905). For some reason I love this rather odd looking building.

I don't remember seeing either of these photos in the USC archive before.

The Opera Reading Club of Hollywood

USCDL
I do love club ladies... ever since seeing the snooty society matrons that Curley, Larry & Moe
would sometimes encounter. I suppose every city had them--in New Orleans where I grew up
there is still the Orleans Club ("Orleans" pronounced the French way, mind you), and I swear
those stout ladies still have hair that makes you think of George Washington or Jane Wyman.
Dowdy dresses over the knee. Great hats. And rather large dogs crammed into sensible
pumps--no FMPs for these girls.

Wilshire and Lucerne? Isn't that where the Higgins-Verbeck mansion is located?

Oldest Women's Club in SoCal...Pasadena 1888 !

Seen here in 1930, The Shakepeare Club of Pasadena was a forum and lauching point for "progressive ideas" such as public kindergarten, public restrooms, juvenile court and the Pasadena Humane Society according to their website.http://www.shakespeareclub.org/Shakespeare.htm

Here is the club house as photographed in 1907

The house was the scene of a meeting of men in 1907 that formed the Pasadena Realty Board. I wonder how progressive that was??.http://www.pasadenaviews.com/pasadena-city-guide/

Boomer: Now THOSE are some real club ladies.... and thank God for them and their civilizing forces all over the country

I knew that there were Ebell clubs all over SoCal, but I never knew of this one way down on 71st Street:
LAPL

LAPL
The South Ebell Club, 7101 S. Menlo. The boys seem to have taken over, but
at least it's still there in all its Deco glory:

Google Street View

Highland Park had its own branch at 131 Avenue 57, also still there:

Scott: The Verbeck house is across Wilshire from the Ebell and just north on Lucerne:

Here is another photo of the High Park Ebell.

This one seems to have a touch of the arts and craft movement.

The art deco Ebell on Menlo is amazing. I'm glad you found that one Gaylord Wilshire.

a great image of Hollywood Young Republicans on Mother's Day 1954, in indignation over vandals smearing the billboard of Mildred Younger, candidate for State Senator. they are giving her a good clean scrubbing

the billboard was located on sunset boulevard just east of figueroa

a 1924 image looking east on sunset across figueroa, today, this view would be of the orsini apartment complex

Good lord, Jansen, these photos you find! Those WONDERFUL old houses on Sunset, especially the Victorian. Both have those long steep stairs that are so emblamatic of old Los Angeles. And that photo of the street and houses in the 20's. If only there was some way to go back in time and spend endless hours staring at these fascinating and atmospheric bldgs. and streets. Thanks.

She lost more than the election

Life
Native Angeleno Mildred Younger (1920-2006),
with a great hat and a great Miracle Mile backdrop.
Younger has an interesting story, if not exactly noir.

From her Times obit (http://articles.latimes.com/2006/nov...l/me-younger16): "Younger was a graduate of Los Angeles High School and a debate champion at USC, where she earned a degree in art history in 1942.... She ran for office... in 1954, narrowly losing her bid to become the first woman in the state Senate. She subsequently was a successful radio and television host but was sidelined in 1958 when she lost her voice after a bout with polio and a car accident. She did not recover her voice for 17 years."

Btw, it seems you can't get away from that other L.A. Mildred: The first
pic to appear when Googling "Mildred Younger" is this:
Warner Bros.
(The caption begins: "When Mildred's younger daughter Kay....")

Great pics, LAboomer! I can't guess where that first picture might've been taken. I love the third pic with the horse and wagon off to the side; I didn't think that would've been seen anymore by 1924. 10 years earlier, sure.

Gaylord, I like that everything seems to point towards Mildred Pierce. It used to be on youtube now it's not, but I remember a spoof Carol Burnett did where she played Joan Crawford as Mildred Pierce, Vicki Lawrence was Veda and Harvey Korman played Monty.

Much of the movie "Old School" (2003) was filmed at the Ebell Club which doubled as a college in the movie.

I could only find one scene on youtube from the movie that I believe shows a bit of the club:

Those foundations with the stairs were still around before The Orsini was built. I remember seeing them and wondering what big houses were there. Such a shame they are gone forever.

Oh yes. Even up to the mid-1990s, along Sunset Blvd. towards downtown you would see stairs, retaining walls and foundations of what I always assumed were grand old houses. I called these blocks the "stairs to nowhere."

Great shots of the Chapman Market.

Last year I happened to snap a photo of its parking lot with my cell phone camera. Not a great quality pic:

Sad to see that that fountain is gone.
