I think we stayed in this area during my visit to SF, didn't know it was so notorious.

is Geary considered part of the Tenderloin?

Geary from Market St. all the way to Van Ness is essentially the main dividing street between the Tenderloin and Nob Hill/Union Square Shopping area. South of Geary is the TL...so the street is an interesting mix of neon lights, cute art galleries, falafel shops, tourists, homeless people and drug dealers.

Not all the way from Market, from Mason street. Once you go east of Mason you're out of the tenderloin and then you're at Union Square. And then after that you hit Market Street.

Interesting photos, with a clear narrative focused on the gritty side of life.

I don't mind some of the gentrification going on in the Tenderloin, but I'm glad it won't likely become entirely sterilized and wealthy like other districts in the city. And a large percentage of new residential projects in the TL are built by non-profits and charitable organizations for vulnerable communities, so not all the new towers are market rate.

My first apartment in San Franicsco was on Taylor (second shot in this thread) at Geary, in 1992.

lol. the gentrification warriors are truly disgusting. There's, of course, nothing wrong with wanting to see neighborhoods improve, but it's another to actively root for sweeping the poor, disenfranchised and working class under the rug so some online hipsters can play fantasy Sim City.

TL has one of my favorite built forms in the city. Great pics, lovely profile of the hood.

the flipside of "online hipsters playing fantasy simcity," i guess, might be "sanctimonious ideologues maintaining theme parks of pathology".

If it was to be gentrified then it would lose most of what makes it such a beautiful and unique spot.

What, exactly, about the current condition of the Tenderloin do you find "beautiful"...? I mean, I know it's a subjective term, but while the Tenderloin is indeed a unique place, "beautiful" is not a word I've ever heard used to describe it.

They featured the tenderloin in a recent episode of drugs inc. it looked as nasty as some of the photos you posted, not an area I would like to spend time in ( unless I was a meth head)

This area looks to have a grittier urban character than the Painted Ladies side of town. The beautiful old architecture is big though, not some 3 - 4 floor buildings.

Beautiful and moving pictures! I like the Tenderloin - it has one of the best bar scenes in the city for sure. Geary St's Theater District certainly borders the TL, but for those who have stayed there (as there are lots of nice, well known boutique hotels and some large famous hotels too) it is not the TL.

Looking forward to the remaining parts of the series! Could the TL be appropriately compared to the Bowery (NYC) of a decade or two ago?

Great photo tour. Last time I was in San Francisco I stayed on Geary Street, and took a walk around the tenderloin. Amazing how much it can change from the other side of Geary Street. You could however see that things were changing there.

Im with you. This is not the beautiful truth that is brought to us in the lies of fiction. This is the ugly truth of reality. This is a seriously rough looking neighborhood. Theres no way I would ever live there with my kids.

Just to give a feel for how expensive SF is, the top floor apartment in the background building in this picture just slashed pricing by $525K and is now asking $4.75M. 3BR-3.5BA, full floor, 3,879 SF ($1,225/sf) with monthly HOAs at $4,118, with parking for 2 cars! Woohoo. Most of the 186 units in the building are studios and 1 BRs that sell for a lowly $400K, which given the location is extremely affordable for this city.

http://sf.curbed.com/archives/2012/0...ns_now_58m.php

The SROs in the TL are all around $550-$650/mo, some having bathrooms and some not. I've also been in one of the SROs recently (don't ask why LoL...no drugs or prostitutes I swear), but these are rooms that are essentially ~150 SF, so these poor people are still paying $3.50-$4.50/sf/mo to live, which is actually right in line with the median rental prices throughout SF. In contrast, the cheapest market rate studios I could find were also in the TL in a rehabbed rental loft conversion building, and they have since raised their pricing to $1950 (from $1550 start when initial lease-up commenced). Sizes begin at 275 SF, so a whopping $7/sf/mo. Still below "median" studio price in city, which is closer to $2300/mo, but usually a little larger (I'm in 469 SF).

In contrast, this uber luxurious 34th floor studio in Trump Tower Chicago is renting for $2,350 for a spacious 580 SF ($4.05/sf) and offers parking for $250/mo. In contrast, studios ranging from 469-695 SF in my nice but certainly not luxurious 1960s/1970s rent-controlled tower range from $2670-$3350/mo and offer parking for $300/mo.

Sorry for the tangent, but the TL is fascinating, and so are the prices of this city where even the TL is more expensive than even the nicest parts/buildings of other large cities. Damn you Twitter IPO!
