But are they spending any of their wealth in Seattle (I mean this as a sincere question because it's something a local might know)? As I said earlier, this is why we should care how many mega-rich our cities have: Because since civilization began the unusually rich have improved the arts and culture and basic services of the cities in which they live. We know Bill Gates is very philanthropic but a lot of his money is going to Africa and elsewhere in the developing world. Is he doing anything for Seattle? And since Bezos bought the Washington Post, his attention seems focused on national politics and Washington as much as on Seattle. But has he done good things for the home town folks?

This is one thing I will say for the poorer folks like Mark Benoff and Mark Zuckerberg: They have indeed given hundreds of millions or perhaps billions (if you could know the complete list and add it all up) to the Bay Area and San Francisco. Mrs. Zuckerberg seems especially devoted to UCSF from which she recently graduated.

Yes...they're two of the main reasons Seattle is booming.

Bezos' main company is creating the largest downtown headquarters on earth in Seattle (8.5msf now, 12msf in a few years). Or at least nobody has challenged my claim on that. They've also been going big time on donations lately. He also has commercial space operations locally in addition to elsewhere.

Gates' company is the only headquarters office that's bigger, at least to my knowledge (14msf). They're suburban but as of last year only 57% of their workers drove alone.

Meanwhile the Gates Foundation, also a large employer, gives away billions per year and a sizeable chunk goes to Seattle. That includes something like $500,000,000 committed to the Univeristy of Washington in the last year, and a large part of the budgets of a variety of other local organizations in the global health and research spheres.

Thankfully we have not hijacked this thread with another debate on the relative merits of Toronto Montreal Vancouver and Calgary. As in the next Chicago thread and so many others.

When Montreal is evacuated due to 100 ft. sea level rise. They'll relocate them to Calgary, often confused with Chicago, which will have already become apart of the United States. It'll be a territory, with no voting rights though because we can't have foreigners (especially from those that speak Fren-glish) influence/meddle with our elections.

60 meters is a lot more than 100 feet.

Yeah I know.

I found the pic after I submitted the post. Pic was from an SSP thread. But the point stands, 100 ft rise would still submerge much Montreal.

Once again, the Rich will survive. The wealthiest neighborhoods around Mount Royal: Westmount and Outremont will be above water.

30 meters is still bad for montreal island, but longueuil is gone. CALGARY WIN (plus they will take all the skyscrapers)

(also urban BOSWASH is gone, so more CALGARY WIN)

My cousins now to be fiance met Trump at the Lincoln Center. Way before he became president, about 4 years ago. All smiles, and he allowed her to get close to get a picture. Fast forward to November 8th, and she was in the city that night protesting.

I'm surprised Vancouver didn't make the list since lots of Richy Von Richerson's live there

Why aren't Madrid and Berlin on this list?

Both wealthy western capitals of wealthy western countries, I would think their elite class would be large. What about Barcelona?

Probably because they're sharing their countries' wealth with other cities (such as Frankfurt and Barcelona) in a way that Paris and London don't?

Also, Spain isn't that rich. Germany, though - if it had a Paris or a London (capital + main city + center of everything), then yes, that city would certainly be on this list.

Yeah, Berlin isn't even Germany's largest metropolitan area. Depending on how you group things, they are either the second or third largest in the country. Germany is pretty polycentric. Even if you break up the Rhine-Ruhr region, Berlin still doesn't dominate size-wise like London or Paris do its countries.

Who exactly is "we"? I was in Oregon, not Chicago. And I made no claim to fame from that, just a quirky anecdote.

Berlin isn't even the wealthiest city in Germany.

It is arguably one of the poorest in fact. Though these determinations are often perilous.
