Is the question regarding the city's setting, the city itself, or the combination of built environment and setting?

Well, if it's all about "whatever is important to me" than my vote goes to QC, as the built form makes up 2/3 of importance while the setting makes up 1/3.

1. QC
2. Vancouver
3. Halifax
4. St. John's
5. Ottawa
6. Victoria
7. Montreal
8. Sherbrooke
9. Winnipeg
10. Calgary

Toss-up between Van and Vic. I went with the latter. Simply because we're talking metro areas; if it were simply city centres I might have gone with Montreal, Halifax, or Quebec.

Quebec City for me, although I've never been west of Ontario (or to Newfoundland). The architecture and the natural setting are both among the best.

The most beautiful I haven't been to are probably Victoria and St. John's.

It's not on the list, but I find Trois-Rivières to be an underrated city. It's older than Montreal, and there are a lot of very attractive buildings. Much of it also has an urban feel to it, despite not being large.

Mine was very close;

1) Quebec City - Been there twice and its absolutely gorgeous in all regards. Loved the scenery and I plan to go there many more times in the future.
2) Halifax - Hidden Jewels make this city the greatest of the great. However I decided against voting for my hometown.
3) Ottawa - Stunning scenery and setting especially near the river and canal areas. Fell in love with the scenery. Hope to return someday soon.
4) Toronto - Great setting near an "oceanlike" waterfront. Slightly over-imposing and flat IMO.
5) Calgary - Current home. Get points for its hills and the view of the mountains. Too empty and its main scenic attraction (Bow River) is subpar.

Other than these I have only been to the Niagara Region and I passed through Montreal. Since I remember of Montreal is the horrendous traffic jam I got stuck in I don't have enough experience to go on. Niagara was nice but not as nice as other cities IMO.

BTW I noticed the poll is ordered by CMA population. As of this year Halifax has reclaimed 12th spot (based on growth rates and the fact Halifax's has increased this year).

I voted for Victoria, I have always loved the setting (and the city itself). And it is unique in Canada that it truly is the only non-winter Canadian city. Even Vancouver gets more snow than Victoria does in many areas of the metro and has the North Shore mountains at its door step. If you want to go skiing in Victoria, you have to leave the city a fare distance.

Hamilton is more beautiful than Vancouver? You dont have to think its number one but not even in the top ten? Youve obviously got a personal problem with Vancouver.
