Drum118 at UT (www.urbantoronto.ca)

These things are barely under construction - the sidewalk is almost ready to be opened up, and these puppies will be off the list.

That is a very banal streetscape. Hopefully they at least plant some trees to soften that monotonous wall of glass.

Streetwall is a new concept for people in Mississauga. Probably they should just take it one step at a time for now.

Is Toronto out-pacing all other cities in North America for new skyscrapers?

Yes, by a wide margin. I can't find the numbers right now.

Its not close!!!

I think last time I saw, you can add all the American construction up across the country, and it doesn't add up to this build out!!!!

The only action at all is really in New York, with Las Vegas, Miami, and Chicago all slowed to a crawl! Most American cities have NOTHING tall underway, althoug OKC has built a new tallest!!

Hardly a wide margin if at all. The pace of construction severely dropped off in 2008 and remains slow despite promise however, the US kingpin is still throwing up towers by the dozen. Add to it dozens of city/metros averaging a one or two towers and Toronto's figures suddenly become very attainable.

Well and not to mention the fact that New York City has 4 supertalls U/C and another 8 proposed and at least a few of them look like they will go through to construction phase. And even still, Four WTC is 298 meters, basically a supertall. So they have 5 very tall (and supertalls) U/C right now. Just because we have a high number of crappy short towers U/C doesn't really mean all that much.

New York's tallest 8 U/C combined probably come close to if not passing the combined height of all U/C towers in Toronto.

And I would hardly say construction has slowed to a crawl in Chicago and Miami, Chicago is building a new supertall(the 319 meter Waterview Tower) and Miami has five towers UC between 150 and 200 meters in height. That's not bad for a country just beginning to recover from a catastrophic recession. PLUS Chicago just finished a 413 meter tower in 2009!

Don't get too cocky guys. We're doing well... but we definitely lose the big-dick contest for now.

Just going by the diagrams, towers currently under construction:

Toronto
New York
Chicago
Miami
Mexico City

According to Emporis, we are building the most highrises in North America: http://www.moneyville.ca/article/106...-the-continent

Emporis is not a relaible enough source. They may have accurate stats for some cities, but I doubt they even have all NA cities covered.

Last I heard Toronto has 3 to 4 times as many skyscrapers and highrises as New York.

Chicago has as many High rises under construction as Vancouver, Montreal or Calgary. Somewhere between 8 to 15 Max.

Here are the numbers from the SSP database:

Toronto - 58 towers over 100 meters U/C
Toronto - 17 towers over 500 feet U/C

United States - 44 towers over 100 meters U/C
United States - 18 towers over 500 feet U/C

Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

I'd say overall, the SSP database is far more reliable than Emporis.
